'We’re frightened to do it the wrong way...' Mel C says Spice Girls are getting closer to confirming 30th anniversary plans
Mel C has appeared on The Rebecca Judd Show on Apple Music 1 and revealed that talks are actively underway about what the Spice Girls are going to do to mark the 30th anniversary of their debut single Wannabe this year.
Mel C says the Spice Girls are "frightened" to celebrate their 30th anniversary this year in the "wrong way".
The 52-year-old singer rose to global fame as part of the iconic pop group alongside Mel B, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell-Horner and Victoria Beckham, and in 2026 the Spice Girls celebrate the milestone year.
Melanie - better known as Sporty Spice in the group - says talks are progressing and Emma, 49, is fully behind a reunion but it is her and Mel B, 50, who have been the main driving forces behind a potential reunion, but she stressed the group is determined not to rush into anything that does not feel right.
Appearing on The Rebecca Judd Show on Apple Music 1, Mel C said: "Okay, we're closer in that Emma's rooting for it too! You know what, I'm not going to throw anybody under the bus. We all are so proud, of course we are, of our legacy. It's amazing. And it is 30 years and we do have to celebrate that in some way this year. I'm always optimistic.
"I think me and Mel B are the cheerleaders and Emma's totally with us, but we all love it so much. I think it's so precious to us. We're frightened to do it the wrong way. Do you know what I mean? So it's like we're still working, we're always talking, lines of communication are open and we are just waiting until we all decide on exactly the best way to do it."
The Stop hitmakers last performed as a full five-piece at the London 2012 Olympic Games Closing Ceremony. Their most recent tour in 2019 went ahead without Victoria, 51, who chose to focus on her fashion business and family life.

Hints of a possible full reunion emerged last year when Victoria attended a concert on the Oasis Live ’25 tour at Wembley Stadium with her husband David Beckham and their children.
Sharing a clip from the night on social media, she captioned it simply, “Tempting,” while tagging her former bandmates.
The post fuelled speculation among fans that Victoria could be open to re-joining the group for a one-off performance or special celebration in honour of the release of their debut single Wannabe 30 years ago in June 1996. She previously admitted on US radio that a concert at the Las Vegas Sphere interested her more than a tour.

Mel C - who previously teased a world tour to mark the anniversary - also spoke to Judd about her her latest single Sweat and upcoming solo album of the same name, revealing that dance music remains a huge inspiration to her.
She said: "The song Sweat actually was born from me doing a DJ mix for Apple Music. It was a fitness mix that I did last year and I really wanted to lean into those workout moments. I kept having Diana Ross’ Work That Body coming into my head – that hook, stretch two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight – and I thought, I have to get that into a song.
"When I was working on the album, that idea stayed with me. I was in the studio with Theo Hutchcraft from Hurts, who I adore, and Kingdoms, a brilliant production and writing team I work with. We were laughing, watching old workout videos, looking back at things like the Arnold Schwarzenegger album around Pumping Iron in the ’80s, and all of that energy just came together. That’s how Sweat was born, and I think it’s a really strong introduction to the album.
"I’ve gone right back to the beginnings of discovering dance music – rave culture breaking through in the early ’90s. There’s plenty of hardcore in there, but then fast forward to today with all these incredible DJ remixes I’m playing out. The music I play as a DJ is exactly the same music that motivates me in the gym, so there’s a really strong crossover between the two worlds for me.
"I’ve always been a pop artist, but dance music has always been there for me too. Right now, DJing is such a huge inspiration and I really want my work as a DJ and my work as a solo artist to feel more connected. That’s where I’m at creatively, and it’s a really exciting place to be."
