Kid Creole and the Coconuts have announced the 'Bye Bye Birdy Tour'.

The 1980s party band are hitting the road in the UK for one last time before retiring to their tropical island of Hawaii after five decades of colourful hits and live shows.

Kid Creole said ahead of his final tour: "Welcome to the Lifeboat Party! Now it is truly time for me to retire! I'm not going to say it again. I'm just going to do it.

"It's been an amazing journey from my little neighbourhood in the Bronx to every continent in the world. I could not have done it without one major companion – MUSIC.

"It is very fitting that the first 'BYE BYE BIRDY TOUR' should take place in Great Britain because I am told that is where the first 'foreign' Kid Creole and the Coconuts Tour took place in 1981. I say 'I am told' because I have no recollection of such details. I trust the OTHERS who have better memories. And I say 'foreign' because the band was born in New York City.

"I owe it to these fans who have stuck by Creolism for over 40 years to give them a huge THANK YOU PRESENTATION. And by doing so, I am sure we will also make new fans. The music will live on. Of this I am certain. It is ageless."

Kid Creole and the Coconuts had seven UK Top 40 hits during the 1980s, including the top ten singles 'Annie, 'I'm Not Your Daddy', 'It's a Wonderful Thing Baby' and 'Stool Pigeon'.

Born in New York City, Kid – whose real name is August Darnell – was inspired at an early age by the sounds of Latin, Disco, Funk, Calypso, Reggae, Jazz, Swing, Rhythm and Blues, Soul, Country and Western, and Rock 'n' Roll.

He started Kid Creole and the Coconuts with Adriana Kaegi and Coati Mundi in 1979 and has gone to release 16 albums and 30 singles.
