The Beach Boys mark 60 years of Pet Sounds with deluxe reissues, rare session material and wellness event
The Beach Boys are celebrating the 60th anniversary of Pet Sounds with a wave of new audiophile editions, archival releases and a digital EP spotlighting Sloop John B.
The Beach Boys’ landmark album Pet Sounds turns 60 this spring, and the band are marking the milestone with a major slate of anniversary releases that highlight why the 1966 classic remains one of the most influential records in pop history.
Arriving on May 15, the campaign includes several premium all‑analog vinyl editions designed to showcase the album’s lush arrangements and studio innovations with new clarity.
Among the highlights is a 2LP Vinylphyle Edition featuring both the mono and stereo mixes, alongside a high‑end Definitive Sound Series pressing created using the One Step process for maximum audio detail. Fans can also pick up a collectible Zoetrope vinyl version complete with a textured cover.
For those interested in the story behind the music, The Pet Sounds Sessions Highlights offers a curated look at the 1997 Grammy‑nominated box set that documented the album’s meticulous 1965–66 recording sessions.
The new collection gathers 25 alternate takes, a cappella tracks and instrumental run‑throughs — all making their vinyl debut — and will be available as a 2CD set and in multiple 2LP formats, including limited‑edition colour variants. Each edition features new liner notes from Beach Boys historian Howie Edelson and a detailed sessionography.
The full 90‑track Pet Sounds Sessions box will also hit streaming services for the first time.
Ahead of the anniversary, the band have released a three‑track digital EP exploring their classic Sloop John B. The set includes a striking a cappella version that isolates the group’s signature harmonies, an alternate take with Carl Wilson on lead vocals, and the familiar stereo mix.
What's more, fans will also be able to join the celebrations in person on Saturday, May 16, when Santa Monica hosts the first‑ever Beach Boys 5K and Wellness Day. Taking place along the Third Street Promenade, the event will feature live music, fitness activities and a community run inspired by the enduring legacy of Pet Sounds. Full details are available at the official website.
Six decades on, Pet Sounds continues to inspire musicians and listeners alike — and this anniversary collection offers one of the most comprehensive looks yet at how Brian Wilson and the band crafted their masterpiece.
