Green Day are involved in the production of a new comedy film inspired by their early years.

The pop punk veterans - comprising Billie Joe Armstrong, Mike Dirnt and Tre Cool - have teamed up with Live Nation Productions on the coming-of-age flick ‘New Years Rev’, based on their days living out of a tour van.

The movie is written and directed by Lee Kirk, the man behind 2016 comedy-drama film ‘Ordinary World’, which saw frontman Billie Joe make his leading role debut.

The synopsis reads: "New Years Rev is a coming-of-age story about three friends - played by Mason Thames, Kylr Coffman, and Ryan Foust - who journey to Los Angeles, mistakenly believing that their band is opening for Green Day on New Years Eve. Their road trip is a rowdy and mischievous jaunt across the country filled with adventures, based on the exploits of Green Day and their years of living in a tour van.”

‘American Idiot’ hitmaker Billie Joe told Variety: "Van days rule.

"You will drive all night on no sleep then play a show for 10 kids in a basement of a friend of a friend’s house 50 miles east of anywhere you’ve ever heard of.

“But you’ll do it again the next day, and the one after that. Because you’re doing it with your bandmates who become your family and it’s unlike anything you’ve ever known.

"It’s electric. Let the music and mischief ensue.”

‘The Office’ stars Jenna Fischer and Angela Kinsey are also among the cast, as well as ‘A Good Person’ actor Ignacio Diaz-Silverio and Marvel star Mark Ruffalo’s son Keen Ruffalo.

Production is currently underway in Oklahoma.

Green Day - who will headline Coachella in April - were previously planning a big screen adaptation of their 'American Idiot' album, after the 2004 LP was transformed into a Tony winning musical.

In 2011, it was reported Tom Hanks was interested in producing, with the project confirmed two years later.

In 2014, playwright Rolin Jones said he was "finishing up" the script, and HBO later gave the "green light" to film in 2016.

However, in 2020, Billie Joe told NME the movie had been "pretty much scrapped”.

Meanwhile, Green Day recently surprised fans by performing their 2009 track ‘Last Night On Earth’ with pop megastar Billie Eilish at the FireAid benefit concert for the victims of the Los Angeles wildfires.
