Selena Gomez confirms she inspired this Taylor Swift song
Selena Gomez has reflected on her long friendship with Taylor Swift and revealed she has inspired two of her pal's songs.
Selena Gomez has revealed that Taylor Swift’s Evermore track Dorothea was inspired by her, finally confirming years of fan speculation about the song’s meaning.
Speaking on her husband Benny Blanco’s Friends Keep Secrets podcast, the Only Murders in the Building star spilled: “Dorothea is about me.”
She explained that the lyrics capture the evolution of their friendship, which began in 2008 when Selena was dating Nick Jonas, and Taylor was dating his brother Joe.
She said: “I feel like a lot of huge moments that were self‑defining, from relationships to family to love to hate, all of it in between — we were figuring it out because I was 15 and she was 18.
“We didn’t really know what was going on. We’ve never seen each other any differently. When I listen to it, I’m so impressed by how it’s eloquently put.”
Selena also revealed that she inspired another Taylor Swift song that has never been released.
She shared: “There’s this song that Taylor wrote about us and it was called Family.
“It was over, easily, a decade ago, insinuating in the lyrics, without quoting, it is basically saying you have these amazing dreams. You want to be in a movie, in every crowd I see you. Then her part was, you believe in my stupid dreams, like playing stadiums.” She added that listening back now feels surreal: “Both of those things have happened for us. And that’s really sweet because back then, she was just like, ‘I wrote this song about us and it was just our story,’ and it was the sweetest thing.”
Reflecting on their parallel life milestones, Selena — who married Benny in September 2025 after getting engaged the previous December — said she finds it “the coolest” that she and Taylor have grown in similar ways.
Taylor became engaged to NFL star Travis Kelce just a month before Selena’s wedding.
Benny asked whether the two friends ever stop to take in how far they’ve come.
Selena replied: “It’s moreso that wow, we survived it as best as we could because it’s literally all we talk about. When we talk about it we’re not like, ‘Look at this prosperity.’ It’s moreso like actually this is so cool that you get it. It’s absolutely unbelievable to come from 17 years of friendship, from multiple heartbreaks and love stories and fun stories in life. We both ended up fortunately being engaged around the same time and that was the coolest part.”
Co‑host Lil Dicky noted that both women had “ended up with good dudes,” and Selena agreed: “I agree… I’m very lucky.”
