The Cure's keyboardist Roger O'Donnell says it's likely the band's next studio album will be released "in the coming year or so".

The 69-year-old musician admits frontman Roger Smith,66, has been quiet of late, with his bandmate suggesting he's in one of his "very deep creative modes".

As a result, he’s not entirely sure where things stand with the follow-up to November 2024’s global smash Songs Of A Lost World — but he doubts fans will have long to wait.

Asked if Roger is still planning to get the LP out before they hit the road next year, he told NME: “You’d have to ask him about that. I didn’t know that Songs Of A Lost World was finished until he sent the songs to us to learn for the Troxy show! I don’t know what’s going on. I know that Jason [Cooper] did a lot of drum tracks in about April, and there was talk of us getting together to play but I haven’t heard much lately. I think Robert is in one of his very deep creative modes, because he’s pretty quiet at the moment.”

And when quizzed on whether fans can expect the LP to drop in the "coming year or so," he responded: "I would think so. We were all very happily surprised by the success of Songs Of A Lost World. For it to do what it did after we had that much time away is fantastic. There’s a bar that The Cure never drops below, so it’s always going to be fantastic – it’s just about whether it’s going to be mega or not.”

A month before Songs Of A Lost World was released, Robert said the follow-up was "virtually finished" and teased another Cure album was also in the works.

He told Matt Everitt: “It will work out this time. Having finished this one, the second one is virtually finished as well. The third one is a bit more difficult because, well if we get that far… Talking about the third album, you see what I mean? I just can’t help myself.”

Songs Of A Lost World marked the band's first full-length studio release in 16 years, following 2008's 4:13 Dream.

As well as the UK, it topped the charts in Austria, Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Sweden and Switzerland.
