Transformers: The Last Knight Review

Bad

With this fifth Transformers movie, it seems clear that Michael Bay is still trying to define this franchise. The first film was solidly entertaining, but the sequels have been hit and miss. And this jarringly chaotic episode never finds its feet. Is it aimed at teen boys (robots hitting each other), young children (a random little girl in the cast) or action fans (Mark Wahlberg being heroic)? Meanwhile, the plot only barely connects a stream of wildly overblown set-pieces.

We find Wahlberg's mad inventor Cade now in hiding protecting the good Autobots, while government meathead Lennox (Josh Duhamel) chases the evil Decepticons. Somewhere in space, tentacled temptress Quintessa (Gemma Chan) has turned heroic Transformer Optimus Prime (Peter Cullen) to the dark side, and now they're heading to suck the life out of Earth, as you do. Humanity's only hope is in a mysterious talisman Cade possesses and the staff of Merlin the magician (Stanley Tucci in an Arthurian prologue), which only Oxford professor Vivian (Laura Haddock) can wield. She's accompanied by dotty Sir Edmund (Anthony Hopkins), who helpfully explains the mythology with the assistance of robot butler Cogman (Jim Carter). Then everyone converges on Stonehenge for an epic battle.

To be fair, Bay does have an eye for spectacle, and the film looks properly amazing in Imax 3D, especially as Bay throws everything he can think of at the screen, including some adorable baby dinosaur robots, a submarine chase, various elements from Star Wars and Alien, and a military invasion that desperately wants to outdo Saving Private Ryan's opening scene. All of this is piled into a blender and edited together with absolutely no sense of logic or geography.

Transformers: The Last Knight - Teaser Trailer

With the few remaining Autobots in hiding, the world is a dark place. Galvatron is still at large and Optimus Prime has left earth to fulfil a bigger mission, having gone to seek out the Creators. Having previously helped the Autobots, Cade Yeager is still in danger and the war between man and machine is reaching ever higher levels.

The Decepticons still have a wish to invade and take over the planet Earth and now it looks like they might be in the best position to do so. Why do these machines have such a fascination with our planet and how many genuine Autobots are left to help fight alongside humans?

The soundtrack to the first trailer for Transformers: The Last Knight is a re-working of Flaming Lips single 'Do You Realize' recorded by Ursine Vulpine.

However a new evil force is at hand attempting to change history, which will send Earth into a new crisis. New human friends will help Optimus Prime and the Autobots face their most difficult task yet, on an amazing journey around the planet that will decide who will win between good and evil.

Miller, Jack Reynor and Titus Welliver. Peter Cullen will once again voice Optimus Prime.

Michael Bay reprised his role as director for this instalment of the franchise. 'Age Of Extinction' also has the same producers as the previous three films Don Murphy, Tom DeSanto, Lorenzo Di Bonaventura and Ian Bryce.

Transformers: Age Of Extinction - Trailer

Following the destruction caused by Optimus Prime's benign Autobots and, their nemeses, the evil Decepticons led by Megatron, the US government have decided to sever ties with the Autobots in a bid to reclaim their crumbling world. After a while, it seemed that they had indeed disappeared completely but Cade Yeager, a struggling inventor who is desperate to put his daughter Tessa through college, is about to make a discovery that would change his life forever when he uncovers the unusual metal properties of the new vehicle he has bought. It isn't long before the government and the Decepticons are swooping in on Cade's home, demanding to know where he is hiding Optimus Prime; America wants to destroy the living machines despite the Autobots past help, and the Decepticons simply want to destroy everything. If the humans want to survive, their old friends may be their only hope.

It's been four years since the disastrous conflict between the benevolent Autobots, led by Optimus Prime, and the evil Decepticons, led by Megatron. Now, it appears that the US government is no longer willing to work alongside the Autobots and instead long for Earth to be reclaimed by mankind. Cade Yeager is an inventor who is struggling to find the money to get his daughter Tessa through college, but he's about to make the breakthrough of a lifetime when he discovers that a vehicle he has newly purchased is made from no ordinary metal. On realising that he is housing Optimus Prime in his workshop, the government and the Decepticons are quick to attack, though when it becomes clear that Megatron is still hellbent on taken over Earth, he must band together with Optimus to save themselves and everybody else on the planet from total extinction.

Transformers 3: Dark Of The Moon Trailer

When man first landed on the moon over 40 years ago, their journey was well documented and broadcast on the TV around the world, what we weren't to know was the details of a secret mission the astronauts carried out on the 'dark side of the moon'. What they discovered was beyond their belief, evidence that we're not alone in the universe.

Piglet's Big Movie Review

Very Good
It's hard to believe that Piglet's Big Movie has made any money over the last two weeks. In an era were kids are used to fancy animation and lots of eye-twitching excitement, this latest entry in the classic Winnie the Pooh cartoons/stories is such an anomaly. Lessons are taught with a pat on the back, not with a blaring soundtrack. You can actually appreciate the detail of the backgrounds and the way the animals talk. And Carly Simon songs are featured throughout the movie. She's old enough to be (gasp!) someone's grandmother!

When you're a revered part of childhoods galore, even Disney can afford not to play overt marketing games. Thank goodness. If I had kids, I would take them to Piglet's Big Movie because it feels like a storybook--you get a chance to take in what's onscreen and not get bombarded with toy advertisements and contemporary alterations (let's say: Tigger as a laid-back, smack talking skateboard champ).
