Las Vegas Sphere mini set for Maryland
A 6,000-seat version of Las Vegas Sphere, is being planned for Maryland.
A smaller-scale version of the groundbreaking Las Vegas Sphere is set to be built in Maryland, marking a major expansion of the immersive entertainment concept beyond Nevada.
Sphere Entertainment executive chairman and CEO James Dolan confirmed plans for the project, revealing that the company is moving forward with a “mini Sphere” at National Harbor in Prince George’s County. The development would form part of a wider ambition to roll out the venue concept across key destinations.
Dolan said: “Our focus has always been on creating a global network of Spheres across forward-looking cities. Sphere is a new experiential medium. With a commitment to bringing innovative opportunities to residents and visitors, Governor Moore, County Executive Braveboy, the State of Maryland, and Prince George’s County recognize the potential for a Sphere at National Harbor to elevate and advance immersive experiences across the area.”
The original Las Vegas Sphere has become one of the most talked-about entertainment venues in the world, famed for its massive LED exterior, wraparound interior screen and cutting-edge audio technology. The Maryland version is expected to be smaller in scale but built around the same principles of immersive, next-generation entertainment.
The original has 18,600 seats, and the smaller version would have a 6,000-seat capacity.
Maryland Governor Wes Moore welcomed the announcement, highlighting the cultural and economic impact the venue could bring to the state.
He added that the project would create jobs, boost tourism and help showcase the state on a global stage.
He said: “Maryland has a long history of providing world-class entertainment and we could not be more excited to work with Sphere Entertainment to bring this cutting-edge project to life. This will be one of the largest economic development projects in Prince George’s County history – proving once again our state is the best place in the country to bring dreams to life.”
While no opening date has yet been announced, early planning discussions are already underway.
The likes of Backstreet Boys, U2, and The Eagles have played the state-of-the-art venue. Meanwhile, Metallica are said to be closing in on a deal to host a residency at the Sin City dome.
