'Succession' and 'The Bear' were named Outstanding Drama and Comedy Series respectively at the Emmy Awards on Monday (15.01.24).
The HBO media drama picked up the former prize ahead of ‘Andor’, ‘Better Call Saul’, ‘The Crown’, ‘House of the Dragon’ , ‘The Last of Us’, ‘The White Lotus’ and ‘Yellowjackets’ and showrunner Jesse Armstrong admitted everyone involved was "honoured" to have taken the prize.
Joined on stage by the cast and crew, he said: "Thank you very much indeed. We want to thank HBO, this wasn't necessarily an easy show to commission in the beginning...
"And we want to say a couple of hellos, to Jeremy Strong, who is making a movie, and Lucy Prebble, who has made a baby. We send our love to both of them.
"Thank you to Brian Cox, who the show has revolved around, whether he was in it or not.
"This is a show about family but it's also about when parties and politics, partisan news coverage gets intertwined with divisive right wing politics and after four seasons of satire as I understand it that's a problem we have now fixed so we can now depart the stage.
"Listen, we have loved the show, we are so honoured. Thank you very much indeed.
'The Bear' took Outstanding Comedy Series, over ‘Abbott Elementary’, ‘Barry’, ‘Jury Duty’, ‘The Marvelous Mrs Maisel’, ‘Only Murders in the Building’, ‘Ted Lasso’ and ‘Wednesday’.
Actor and producer Matty Matheson - who is also a real life chef - gave the acceptance speech but was quickly interrupted by co-star Ebon Moss-bachrach, who planted a long kiss on his mouth.
He began: "I just want to thank restaurants as a whole, hospitality as a whole."
After Ebon's interruption, he continued: "I love you Ebon. I just love restaurants so much. The good, the bad, it's rough.
"We're all broken inside and every single day we've got to show up and cook and make people feel good by eating something and sitting at a table, it's really beautiful.
"All of us get to make a show together and make people feel good, or or filled with anxiety or triggered it seems."
