Black Rain Review

Good
Let's ponder these ingredients: Ridley Scott, Michael Douglas, sunglasses, motorcycles, Osaka, and nighttime. Sounds like a recipe for Black Rain indeed.

Douglas is a mildly corrupt cop (he's on the take, sure, but he also races motorcycles to earn a few bucks before work), but we are expected to forgive this because he has to pay alimony and child support (though the wife seems to be far better off). While internal affairs closes in, our pal Nick gets involved in a Yakuza gang war -- as he and partner Charlie (Andy Garcia) are having lunch, no less.

Indiana Jones And The Temple Of Doom Review

Very Good
The second entry in the Indiana Jones series is definitively the "darkest" and worst (George Lucas notes in the DVD supplement material that he was in a bad mood due to his divorce proceedings). But like a bad Star Wars movie (yeah, I'm probably alone in this), Temple of Doom is still plenty of fun and stands up to repeat viewings.

Taking place a year before Raiders of the Lost Ark, Doom is the first movie chronologically in the trilogy. That means no Nazis, and unfortunately that means the stakes are at an all-time low. Indy isn't out to save the world this time; he's just saving a small Indian village... and his own ass, of course. There's also no Jewish/Christian mythology to deal with, which makes for an interesting change of pace but lowers the stakes and the intrigue considerably. Instead we have some magic rocks, some enslaved and starving kids, and an ancient cult quietly sacrificing people in an underground pool of lava. Hell, if Indy hadn't stumbled upon the scene, no one would have ever been the wiser.

The Alarmist Review

Good
Also known as Life During Wartime, The Alarmist is wacky fun mired in sheer oddity. For starters, why is the video title different than the theatrical title? Why do these characters act so strangely? Probably because the story -- about a burglar alarm salesman who breaks into houses to drum up business -- doesn't carry the picture on its own. Only by stretching the characters into ridiculousness does the film get more interesting.

The Love Letter Review

Bad
Can romantic comedy get any worse than this? A mysterious love letter makes its cliched rounds of a New England town, and everyone thinks everyone else is in love with them. The centerpiece affair: A May-December romance between Scott and a ghoulish Capshaw. Embarrassing to watch.
