Disney's 'Frozen' Storms The Box Office But Still Can't Compete With The Red-Hot 'Hunger Games: Catching Fire'

Over the holiday weekend two films stood out as favourites for the Thanksgiving cinemagoers, Lionsgate's sci-fi epic 'The Hunger Games: Catching Fire' still remains dominant at the box office, still reigning at No.1.

The action-packed sequel begins after Katniss (Jennifer Lawrence) wins the previous 'Hunger Games'. Herself and 'Peeta' (Josh Hutchinson) set off on a 'Victory Tour' but on their travels they sense a rebellion is brewing within the districts but President Snow wants to stop their up-rise before it's too late.

In its second weekend of release the latest instalment of Suzanne Collins trilogy brought in a staggering $74.5 million from Friday to Sunday, setting a new Thanksgiving record for the largest 3-day release, and now brings its domestic total to $297 million after 10 days.

But Disney's 'Frozen' nearly cooled off the sequel as the retelling of Hans Christian Andersen's "Snow Queen" earned an impressive $67 million in its opening weekend and $93 million from Sunday to Wednesday.

'Frozen' also broke a Thanksgiving box office record

The animation, starring Idina Menzel, Josh Gad and Kristen Bell, follows Anna, the future Queen of Arendelle, as she races against time to prevent her sister from unwittingly turning the kingdom into an eternally icy realm, meeting some new friends and learning some important lessons on the way.

It has been unanimously praised by critics and it seems cinemagoers agree as 'Frozen' also broke a Thanksgiving record as it earned the largest 5-day release, beating 'Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone' which was set 12 years ago.

Disney's 'Thor: The Dark World' took a back seat in 3rd position earning $11.1 million and the comedy sequel 'The Best Man Holiday' landed at No.4 with $8.4 million. Rounding off the top 5 was the opening 'Homefront,' starring James Franco and Jason Statham, which earned $6.9 million.
