MOD SUN realises his vision of creating a "shopping cart musical" in the video for his latest single - 'Rich Kids Ruin Everything'. 'The Internet Killed The Rockstar' artist posted on Instagram shortly after the video premiered and said - "I’m so proud of this one...we worked really hard on it. I saw a vision in my head + we did everything possible to bring it to life...it was not easy! But all good art is worth fighting for. This is the shopping cart musical, please share it with everyone you know".
'Rich Kids Ruin Everything' is the first new track from the Bloomington rapper this year. It's also his first new solo music since he dropped his fourth album in May of last year. The Minnesotan singer-songwriter has been heavy on the hook-ups of late featuring on a whole host of collaborative tracks including 'Flames' with Avril Lavigne, 'Down' with Travis Barker, '0X1=LOVESONG (I Know I Love You)' with TOMORROW x TOGETHER, 'Empty Bottles' with Bryce Vine and 'Broken In All The Right Places' with Lost Kings.
Talking about his new track Derek Smith (aka MOD SUN) explained - "I grew up a scene kid, I grew up a skateboarder and a pop-punk kid and I used to get made fun of for being all of those, for the way I looked, the way I dressed, for the way I acted and all the things love and it’s both awesome and hilarious, yet confusing seeing the general public and pop culture embracing all the things that I would get torn down for. This is a song that I wrote for all the kids that feel confident in their own skin and don’t walk around wearing a costume".
The somewhat sarcastic song takes a pop at those that follow the trends, just because they are trending. "Everything now is about trends. If it keeps going this way and getting championed then eventually originality will be a lost art. I’m trying to let people know that there’s more to this world than what’s currently popular. I want kids to feel like it’s important to be visionaries not followers".
