Liam Payne’s name sent to the moon on NASA mission as fans say he'll 'never stop shining'
Liam Payne’s name was sent to the moon aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission, sparking emotional tributes from fans.
The late Liam Payne has been given a touching cosmic tribute after fans arranged for his name to be included on an SD card launched into space aboard NASA’s Artemis II mission.
The card — carrying 1.5 million names — was tucked inside a cuddly toy of the craft’s mascot, Rise, and sent on a journey around the moon.
One fan wrote on X: “Liam Payne’s name has gone to the moon… thanks to a dedicated fan.
"It feels so fitting, because he was always our light.
"From the stage to the stars, he’ll never stop shining for us.”
Another penned: “It’s an honour to do this for Liam. To infinity and beyond.”
Liam’s long‑standing love of space made the gesture even more poignant.
Back in 2015, he teamed up with NASA to film One Direction’s Drag Me Down video at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas — an experience he described as surreal.
He admitted he’d binged “NASA unexplained mysteries‑style documentaries” the night before and turned up full of questions.
He said at the time: “I asked one and the lady was like, ‘That’s classified, actually – you’re not supposed to ask that."
Liam was also stunned to learn the suits worn in the video were the real deal: “The suits we are wearing in that video have actually been to the moon. I never thought I would get to do that.”
The One Direction star tragically fell to his death at a hotel in Buenos Aires, Argentina, aged just 31, in October 2024.
