Dave Grohl was clueless about daughter Violet's record deal - until she casually mentioned it
Violet Grohl casually informed her famous father of her major record label signing.
Dave Grohl has said he was unaware his daughter Violet had signed her first record deal until she casually informed him during a family dinner.
Speaking on The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X, the Foo Fighters frontman explained that although he knew the 19‑year‑old musician was meeting labels, he had not been told she had finalised anything.
He said: “I had no idea.
“I knew she was looking to sign a record deal, and she was like, ‘Hey dad, can I come over for dinner tonight?’ And I’m like, ‘Yeah, sure. What do you want me to make?’ And she came over and told me, like, ‘I signed my record deal today.’ I’m just like, ‘Oh my God!’”
Violet recently announced she has signed with Republic Records / Island EMI and has begun releasing new material, including What’s Heaven Without You, followed by the tracks Thum and Applefish.
Grohl said he had no involvement in the making of her debut album, which she recorded with producer Justin Raisen.
He said: “She made this album with a producer named Justin Raisen, and she did it on her own.
“She met the producer, and they would go to the studio every day and she would send me songs when she was finished. But I had absolutely nothing to do with this record at all.”
He added that he would have liked to be more hands‑on but that Violet preferred to work independently.
The Learn to Fly hitmaker said: “I’m the dad who wants to be there and know everything. And she’s just totally doing her own thing. It’s amazing.”
Grohl also said her approach to the project influenced his own work on Foo Fighters’ upcoming album Your Favorite Toy.
He noted: “The way that they made that record and the energy of it, I was like, ‘Oh, man. I’ve just been inspired by my daughter’s debut album.’ It’s cool.”
Violet has performed with Foo Fighters since 2018, contributed vocals to their 2023 track Show Me How, and appeared with the surviving members of Nirvana at the Fire Aid benefit concert in Los Angeles last year.
Foo Fighters release Your Favorite Toy on April 24 and are set to tour the UK, Europe, North America, Australia and New Zealand through 2026 and 2027.
