The Beatles biopic Hamburg Days is coming to the BBC.

The broadcaster has acquired the rights to the upcoming six-part series, which is based on Klaus Voormann's autobiography of the same name about his time getting to know the group which would become the Fab Four.

The series, like the book, is set in the early 1960s when a then-inexperience band from Liverpool crossed paths with Voorman and another artist, Astrid Kirchherr.

The BBC teased: "Together they help spark a transformation that turns a scrappy group of teenagers into the greatest music phenomenon the world has ever known: The Beatles."

The series will give fans another look at the birth of rock and roll, exploring the early journey of John Lennon, Sir Paul McCartney, Sir Ringo Starr and George Harrison.

Sue Deeks, Head of Scripted Pre-buy Acquisitions at the BBC, said: “Hamburg Days is the fascinating story of how, in the space of two short years, a raw young band from Liverpool honed their music skills in Hamburg, before returning home to become an overnight worldwide success.

"It is an incredible story, accompanied (of course) by an amazing soundtrack!”

The show has been developed by Generation War's Benjamin Benedict and Succession's Jamie Carragher, while Voorman himself - who remained a friend over the years - is serving as a consultant.

German director Christian Schwochow - known for his work on The Crown - is the showrunner, while Oasis: Supersonic filmmaker Mat Whitecross is at the helm.

The music will be curated by BAFTA-winning producer David Holmes, who has worked on the likes of the Ocean's film franchise and shows like Killing Eve.

The Turbine Studios series will air on BBC iPlayer and BBC One, while AGC International will handle worldwide sales outside of the UK (BBC) and Germany (ZDF).
