3. His Name Is Alive Happy Blues/ One Year/Nothing Special (4AD)
Warn Defever, now on his sixth album release under the guise His Name Is Alive is very excited about this new project. Past releases have been created amidst a maelstrom of rock, ambient, surf and new age. But then he met vocalist Lovetta Pippen. Everything changed.

Shes the best singer Ive ever heard in my life, he said and I just wanted to make an album that was about her.

This 12 introduction does just that. Happy Blues has a touch of Eryka Badu or Jill Scott. Its a soulful, down-tempo, head nodding croon that takes Warn into the wonderful world of RnB. One Year is a beautiful minimalist lament that highlights further still the ladies vocal strengths. Nothing Special is plain and simply another vestige of great talent. Remixes that come courtesy of Four Tet, Susumu Yokota, Minotaur Shock and Nonplace make this package all the more unmissable with a range of appropriately subtle and leftfield rehashes.
