Gwyn Ashton Prohibition Album

Blues guitar rock remains a healthy genre, with legends like Gary Moore still plying the trade that legends like Rory Gallagher and Stevie Ray Vaughan made their own.

Here, award-winning Aussie Ashton joins with bass player Chris Glenn and drummer Ted McKenna, formerly of Sensational Alex Harvey Band and Michael Schenker Group. At turns, Ashton reminds of Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top, George Thorogood and Gallagher and Vaughan (especially on his album-closing tribute). Prohibition is a great deal more satisfying than Gary Moore's recent release - the vocals are better, and the tunes more inventive. There is a variety of styles, based around the live rock staples - Southern Rock, blues, jazz blues and Zep hard rock.

The album won't trouble the charts, but for anyone who likes their guitar thick, fuzzed up and played by a virtuoso, it's a great listen.

3.5/5
