Flik Royale is a sullen, thirteen-year old boy from middle-class Atlanta, Georgia, who is sent to live with his preacher grandfather, Da Good Bishop Enoch Rouse, in the housing projects of Red Hook, Brooklyn for the summer.
Having never met each other before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to show Flik the light of Christianity and make him a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather's constant preaching and the major culture shock of inner-city New York life - complete with a run-in with the infamous Bloods gang - Flik's summer appears to be a total disaster at first. However things start to look up when he meets Chazz Morningstar, a pretty girl his age living in the same district as his grandfather, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn and the brighter side of life. Through her love and the love his grandfather shows him as his stay progresses, Flik begins to realize that the world is a much bigger place, and perhaps a much better place, than he'd ever imagined when he was in the sanctity of suburban Atlanta.
It is a story of a family, friendship and belief, not just in Jesus Christ, but in life as a whole.
