The world is far from a fair place. Two great cities, New York and New Delhi, both serve as overwhelming symbols for economic and patriarchal control, respectively. In New York, a young Muslim man is driven by a terrible past to commit atrocities against a peaceful scholar, for reasons which seem perfectly right to him. In New Delhi, a young woman confronted with an arranged marriage, run away with her same-sex lover to pursue the relationship she needs, outside of what her society has chosen for her. With a strong an oppressive burden on these four individuals, they are all forced to look at just what is freedom, really?
'Unfreedom' is an upcoming socio-political drama from first-time director, Raj Amit Kumar. Before the film was made, the screenplay (by first-time writer Damon J. Taylor and Kumar) was awarded the first place prize for the 2009 Faculty Screenwriting Competition by the University Film and Video Association. Due to some of the films more critical content, a censorship board for Indian films proposed a series of cuts to the film for a theatrical release. When Kumar refused to make the cuts, the film was banned from release in India. 'Unfreedom' is set for release in the US on 29th May 2015.
