A lost episode from 1969, called 'A Stripe For Frazer', has been developed into an animation ahead of the 'Dad's Army' movie next month.
With the release of the much-anticipated Dad’s Army movie just one month away, the BBC has announced that it’ll be making available a ‘lost episode’ from the original series as an animation via the BBC store.
‘Dad’s Army’, the much-beloved sitcom about a British Home Guard in Walmington-on-Sea during World War II aired between 1968 and 1977. The episode in question, entitled ‘A Stripe For Frazer’, has only ever been broadcast once in March 1969, and was lost along with two other ‘Dad’s Army’ episodes from around the same time. At the BBC, it was at one point a common practice to discard or record over old tapes – for some bizarre reason.

A high quality audio version of the episode was recently discovered, for which the network decided to create an accompanying animation in order to coincide with the upcoming movie release, set for February 5th in the UK.

It will be making the special episode available on the BBC Store from February 4th. “As the UK renews its love affair with Dad’s Army we’re delighted to be bringing fans an exclusive chance to buy this brilliant lost episode which has been missing from the Dad’s Army portfolio for nearly half a century,” said Jonathan Green, head of the BBC Store, in a statement.
The story of the episode concerns what happens to Frazer after Captain Mainwaring promotes him to Lance Corporal, with him vying with Lance Corporal Jones for Mainwaring’s attention and irritating the other members of the platoon at the same time.
The movie version, arriving very soon, sees a number of iconic British actors taking up the key roles, with Toby Jones, Bill Nighy, Michael Gambon, Tom Courtenay and Blake Harrison included.
