A Raisin in the Sun director Daniel Petrie has died from cancer at the age of 83.

The Canadian-born film-maker, whose movies notoriously explored controversial subjects, died on Sunday (22AUG04) at his Los Angeles home.

His son DANIEL PETRIE JR says, "He explored difficult subjects, often ahead of his time, with films like A Raisin in the Sun, which dealt with racism, and THE DOLLMAKER, starring Jane Fonda, which dealt with women coming into their own as people and breadwinners."
