Paul McCartney announces new solo album, The Boys of Dungeon Lane
Paul McCartney will release The Boys of Dungeon Lane, a deeply personal album inspired by his early life in Liverpool.
Sir Paul McCartney has announced his new album The Boys of Dungeon Lane, set for release on May 29, with lead single Days We Left Behind available now.
The 83‑year‑old music legend is returning to deeply personal territory for his first solo project in more than five years, revisiting the Liverpool streets, family memories and early friendships that shaped his life long before The Beatles became a global phenomenon.
The album finds McCartney looking back on his childhood, his parents, and the early days spent with John Lennon and George Harrison — the quiet, formative period before fame took hold.
The lead track, Days We Left Behind, draws directly from the neighbourhoods he grew up in, including Dungeon Lane in Speke.
McCartney described the song and album title in a full statement: “This is very much a memory song for me. The album title, The Boys of Dungeon Lane, comes from a lyric in this track. I was thinking just that, about the days I left behind and I do often wonder if I’m just writing about the past but then I think how can you write about anything else? It’s just a lot of memories of Liverpool. It involves a bit in the middle about John and Forthlin Road which is the street I used to live in. Dungeon Lane is near there. I used to live in a place called Speke which is quite working class. We didn’t have much at all but it didn’t matter because all the people were great and you didn’t notice you didn’t have much.”
Recording began five years ago after McCartney connected with producer Andrew Watt, with sessions taking place between tour dates in Los Angeles and Sussex.
The album spans rock, harmony‑driven tracks and intimate acoustic moments, with McCartney performing many of the instruments himself.
The Boys of Dungeon Lane follows 2020’s McCartney III, marking the next chapter in his ongoing creative run.
