Alex Van Halen confirms progress on unheard Van Halen music, begins hunt for singer
Alex Van Halen and Steve Lukather are currently searching for a vocalist to complete the unreleased Van Halen tracks.
Alex Van Halen has revealed that long‑shelved Van Halen recordings are finally being developed into a full release.
The 72-year-old drummer confirmed that he and guitarist/producer Steve Lukather are working together to complete material that was originally intended to become the band’s next album before Eddie Van Halen passed away in 2020.
Speaking in a new interview with Brazilian channel KazaGastão, Alex said fans have repeatedly asked about unreleased tracks, but he refuses to put out anything that feels unfinished.
He explained that the sessions already contain drums, guitar and bass — including Wolfgang Van Halen’s original parts — but vocals were never recorded.
He said: “These songs were meant for the next Van Halen record."
The pair are now searching for a singer who can match the era and spirit of the material, after their first choice, Paul Rodgers, was unable to take part.
Alex stressed that the goal isn’t simply to release whatever is left in the vault, but to complete the music to the standard the band set during their final years together.
He noted that the vocalist needs to come from the same generation to truly understand the band’s musical language, saying that shared experience is essential to capturing the right feel.
Van Halen’s history includes three main frontmen — David Lee Roth, Sammy Hagar and Gary Cherone — but Alex and Lukather are currently looking outside that lineup as they work to bring the unfinished album to life.
