Robert De Niro - 'Taxi Driver' Probably Won't Get A Sequel, But Robert De Niro Would Like To See One

Apparently Robert De Niro is getting nostalgic for the good ol’ days, as the actor recently mentioned that he’d love to do a sequel to his 1976 classic Taxi Driver. De Niro said to The Guardian that he would like to see where his character Travis Bickle would end up after after all these years.

De Niro would love to revisit his cult character.

The original was directed by Martin Scorsese and spawned persistent rumors of a sequel over the years. De Niro even said that Scorsese and writer Paul Shrader got together to work out a possible script, but the idea never actually came into being. Nevertheless, De Niro would love to revisit Travis.

"I'd like to see where Travis is today. There was something about the guy – all that rage and alienation, that's what the city can do to you. I mean Marty and I are from New York and even we can feel alienated."

For De Niro, Travis is something of a symbol of New York.

Unfortunately, De Niro’s words don’t sound like there might be a chance at a sequel at all. When asked what happened to the project in the end, he vaguely explained: “I talked to Marty and Paul did take a shot at something, whether it was an outline or a script, I forget. But somehow we didn't feel it was right and it didn't take off."

When it doesn’t work, it doesn’t work. In any case, De Niro isn’t short on career opportunities. These days he can be seen The Family, a Luc Besson crime comedy, where he plays a mobster in the witness protection program, who is forced to relocate his family to France and start a new life. De Niro also starts in the newly released Last Vegas, a Hangover-esque comedy about a group of sixty-somethings, who travel to Vegas to give their last remaining single friend a bachelor party to remember.

Even without the sequel, De Niro has plenty of projects lined up.
