Many thought Lone Ranger would be Johnny Depp’s last chance saloon, but that’s just because it’s a Western, and nobody really knew just how bad it could be. Anyway, it was bad – oh so bad – and bombed at the box office.

Johnny DeppDepp's star is falling, or is it?

Now Depp is set to reprise his role as The Mad Hatter in Alice In Wonderland 2. Is this such a good idea? That’s what we pondered earlier on, so you can find out for sure if it is or not right here. The first film wasn’t exactly a smash hit – it managed a paltry 51% on Rotten Tomatoes. But Depp is used to making films that the critics don’t love.

"Depp is a star as well as a rare talent, so there is no doubt he can sustain a few misfires," Exhibitor Relations box office analyst Jeff Bock recently told Yahoo! Movies. "And before anyone writes him off, remember, he'll be donning Jack Sparrow duds again for 'Pirates 5,' it will gross a billion dollars, and everyone will forget about that dead crow on his head."

It’s no real surprise Depp is still landing big roles. The amount of people actually questioning his ability to drag in the punters pails in insignificance to the amount of people who go ‘oh look Johnny’s in that, it must be good.’ Plus, Pirates and Alice are both sequels, meaning they’ll pull in a large chuck of ticket-buyers on the strength of that alone.
