Shaun Ryder says when dies he wants to be cremated, with his ashes sprinkled into a “f***ing crisp packet” and buried under a tree in his back garden.

The Happy Mondays and Black Grapes frontman - who was at the forefront of the 'Madchester' music scene of the late '80s and early '90s - admits he has contemplated his own death and what he would like his final send-off to be.

Ultimately, Shaun, 63, doesn't care what happens to him after he shuffles off this mortal coil, and, despite his Catholic background, he wouldn't be bothered if his ashes were poured into an empty bag of crisps.

Sharing his dark humoured take on his own mortality in an interview with Contact Music, he said: “You could put me in a f***ing crisp packet and bury me under a tree. Even though I’m Catholic I’m not f***ing a**ed. Just bury me in the f***ing back garden!"

Shaun's interest in his own funeral was peaked after he appeared on Channel 4’s Celebrity Send Off, on which his Happy Mondays bandmate and best friend Bez had to organise the singer's funeral.

Bez, 61, took inspiration from the several UFO encounters Shaun has experienced during his life and his obsession with aliens.

But the Step On singer says producers had to tone down Bez's plans, because initially they were "absolutely f***ing mad" and would even have featured "dwarves in glass coffins".

He said: "You know what? It would have been really funny if they’d given me the f***ing funeral that Bez wanted to do. Obviously that was all supposed to be Bez’s idea, what they filmed, but they had to scale his down because the one he wanted to make was absolutely f***ing mad!

“Bez’s idea was just a bit too way out, he wanted all sorts of things, shall we say dwarves in glass coffins. He wanted to give mushrooms to the people behind the cameras, he wanted to do all sorts.”

Shaun is heading with the Happy Mondays on a UK tour celebrating the 35th anniversary of their album Pills 'n' Thrills and Bellyaches.

The tour kicks off in Newcastle on 13th March and end in Belfast on 24th April. The run of shows includes dates along the way at The Roundhouse in London (27th March) and a hometown show at Manchester’s O2 Victoria Warehouse (11th April).
