True stories of music and the macabre...

Happy Friday the 13th to those who love all things strange and sensationalist! Today we thought we'd feed that morbid streak by exploring some of the craziest things that have happened in the music industry over the years. Be warned: It's not for the faint-hearted...

1. Ozzy Osbourne's batty stage antics

Probably one of the craziest true stories in rock, Ozzy Osbourne made headlines in 1982 after biting the head off a bat while on stage at the Veterans Memorial Auditorium in Des Moines, Iowa during his Diary of a Madman Tour. Somebody had thrown the bat on stage during his performance and he, believing it to be made of rubber, seized the opportunity for a bit of theatrical fun.

The 90s was the greatest decade for movie soundtracks. Change our minds.

The 90s feels like a hundred years ago now, but the movies and music of the decade still stick in our minds, and we still revisit them year after year with a stronger and stronger sense of nostalgia. We're celebrating seven of the most memorable soundtracks of 90s cinema.

1. Lost Highway (1997)

David Lynch movies have never disappointed with their accompanying soundtracks, but Lost Highway has got to be the best. Produced by Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor, the tracklist features some great alternative tunes as well as original music by Reznor, Angelo Badalamenti and Barry Adamson. Highlights such as David Bowie's I'm Deranged and a unique rendition of I Put a Spell on You by Marilyn Manson make it one of the heaviest and most haunting soundtracks on our list.

It's the 50th anniversary of the serial killer's debut album 'Lie: The Love and Terror Cult'.

We're taking a rather different approach to our 'Album of the Week' feature this week as we explore instead the power that serial killer and cult leader Charles Manson had on musical culture on this, the 50th anniversary of his album Lie: The Love and Terror Cult which was recorded between 1967 and 1969 and released during his trial in 1970.

While there's arguably nothing especially remarkable about the album to note in terms of musical dexterity - at best, it's a mediocre folk record with disjointed lyrical themes - it does have a cult following thanks to the macabre history surrounding it. Artists like The Brian Jonestown Massacre and Neil Young are purported fans of the album, though whether they would still be if Manson hadn't incited his followers to commit nine murders during the summer of 1969 is another question.

Ten Underrated Rock Albums By Iconic Artists

By in Music / Festivals on 14 February 2020

Nine Inch Nails Dire Straits The Darkness Soundgarden

These albums are not nearly as appreciated as they should be.

Throughout music's history regardless of genre, an immensely small number of names have managed to immortalise themselves with iconic songs. Fewer names still have earned an eternal fanbase thanks to an entire record and the band's that do are now hailed as some of the greatest musicians of all time. Bands such as The Beatles, Sex Pistols, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Fleetwood Mac, The Prodigy, Metallica and others have stayed in peoples minds and playlists long after their prime thanks to creating timeless records.

But a band's breakthrough, landmark and iconic record isn't always their best album. In some rare cases, a megastar band will release a record that fails to outshine their other albums, despite being undisputedly superior. This article will comb through the discography of several 'legacy' bands and identify the most underrated and overlooked records they ever released.

Album Of The Week: Celebrating 25 Years Of Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral

By Holly Mosley in Music / Festivals on 08 March 2019

Nine Inch Nails

The Downward Spiral was released on this day (March 8) in 1994.

This week we are looking at the 25th anniversary of Nine Inch Nails' legendary second album. The Downward Spiral was noted by critics for its strong departure from their debut when it was released on Nothing Records and Interscope Records, and they've never released another album quite like it.

Image caption Nine Inch Nails - The Downward Spiral

After their synth-pop based 1989 debut Pretty Hate Machine, The Downward Spiral was a surprising change in sound. This was a scuzzier, gritty record with more elements of industrial rock and metal. There was almost something less polished about it, but it did its job in propelling Nine Inch Nails to international stardom.

The Nine Inch Nails frontman thinks that influential musicians sharing their opinions of social and political issues is of vital importance for young people and others who may not be able to voice their feelings but need somebody to stand-up on their behalf. He also thinks that stars like Taylor Swift, who avoid entering into political discussions, care more about their 'brand' than what's going on in the world.
