Gerard Depardieu Banned From Ukraine For Pro-Russian Views

Ukraine's culture minister Ivan Kirilenko has drawn up a blacklist of 117 names in the entertainment industry and banned them from the country for expressing pro-Russian views.
French actor Gerard Depardieu has been banned from entering Ukraine for a period of five years because of his apparent comments last year in support of Russia’s annexation of the Crimea, according the state’s security service on Wednesday (July 29th).
A spokeswoman for the Ukrainian government Olena Hitlyanska said that the 66 year old actor was a “threat to national security” and now barred from entering the country by way of a blacklist organised by the state’s culture minister Ivan Kirilenko.

FIFA, world football's governing body is no stranger to controversy and ridicule, but even by Sepp Blatter's standards, this is ridiculous. You may not be familiar with United Passions, a vanity project by the organisation to play up its hapless leader. It cost £19 million to make and has taken just £125,000 at the box office.
Bizarrely, the movie boasts a stellar cast including French actor Gerard Depardieu, Sam Neill and the hugely accomplished Tim Roth, who plays Blatter. The movie was shown at the Zurich Film Festival on Sunday, which only 120 people turning up at the 500 capacity venue.

Both this film and its central character are so unapologetic that it's difficult to get either out of your head long after the final credits roll. A fictionalised version of a notorious real story, this is an unflinching account of how the rich and powerful live seemingly above the law. Until they crash with a thud so loud it's heard around the world. And as an exploration of how money and privilege corrupt the soul, this film is essential viewing, no matter how uncomfortable it is to watch.
At the centre is Devereaux (Gerard Depardieu), the corpulent head of the World Bank, whose life is a whirlwind of prostitutes, drugs and wild sex parties, even as he still has hopes of one day becoming president of France. Then in a five-star suite in a Manhattan hotel, he unthinkingly assaults a maid (Pamela Afesi). And he has no idea why he's being arrested in a media frenzy. He calls his wealthy wife Simone (Jacqueline Bisset) for bail him out, and she reluctantly drops her charity work to fly to New York and rent a house for them for the duration of his trial, standing by his side for the cameras, along with his daughter Sophie (Marie Moute). But Devereaux is so sure his political connections will get him off that he remains utterly unrepentant.
Depardieu is astonishing in the role, giving a fearless performance as a man who is so self-absorbed that he can't even begin to think that his actions might hurt someone. Consequences don't matter to him, because he's always done whatever he wants. And Depardieu is utterly transparent in every scene, most memorably when he is strip-searched by the cops and, even more disturbingly, when he mauls a young journalist (Shanyn Leigh) interviewing him about the trial. Opposite him, Bisset is radiant and fierce as a woman worn down by her infant-like husband, but standing by him against her better judgment. Their bristly conversations in the final act play out in long takes that are seriously gripping.

Gerard Depardieu has managed to annoy the Edinburgh Fringe Festival organisers by his absence. The controversial French actor, who has form for this kind of thing, chose a night in a traditional pub on the Sleat peninsula on Skye.
Pictured drinking and being merry the night before, it’s obvious why Depardieu didn’t manage the fairly hefty trip south east to Edinburgh, where he was expected to appear ahead of the screening of Welcome to New York. A belly full of local beers, whiskey and haggis didn’t prove conducive to a day in front of an expectant film festival crowd.

French actor Gérard Depardieu has been fined 4,000 Euros (£3,415) and slapped with a six month licence suspension after he drunkenly fell from his scooter in Paris.
The world-famous Asterix star, Gérard Depardieu, has been fined and banned for six months for drink driving by a French court after he was scooting about drunkenly last November (2012), fell off, and ended up in a police station.
Depardieu has a history of drink-related driving incidents, having crashed his motorcycle in 1999 and despite alcohol levels at five times the legal limit, he escaped with face and leg injuries.
He has also attracted negative media attention for such incidents as punching a motorist last year following an altercation in Paris that allegedly involved Depardieu crashing his scooter into the driver's car.

The grape industry is a fashionable movie for celebrities nowadays, though some take it more serious than others. It's likely that Brangelina have tasted a nice fruity rose and decided to put their name to it, though some actors and musicians have gone the hold hog and bought entire vineries. In 2007, Nielsen's research of supermarket wine purchases showed sales of celebrity wines were up by 19%. It probably gives the consumer something to impress friends with after popping open the cork, "This one is made by Brad and Angelina, you know."
One actor very much active in both the production and business dealings of wine is French-turned-Russian star Gerard Depardieu, who owns wineries in several countries across the globe and even has his passport (now Russian) listing his occupation as vigneron. Since 2001, Depardieu has put his name to 13 different wines with wine mogul Bernard Magrez, mostly in conjunction with another expert, Michael Rolland. During an interview with Decanter.com, the Green Card actor said, "What I don't like is to publish a ban des vendages on a certain date [before which one is not allowed to harvest], I find that stupid. When you taste and you say "that's ready" I don't know why I need to keep it ripening. Sometimes I find wines that are a little overripe. I like wines to be a bit nervy, that aren't too aggressive."
