Harry Connick Jr. was the last celebrity to gain the role, his judging position was only confirmed last week by THR. Connick Jr. also performed on last season's American Idol on a number of occasions.

On being one of the judges, Connick Jr. said "I am honoured that they've asked me to be a judge this season. As an entertainer, I am truly excited to bring my perspective to American Idol, and to help emerging performers find their way."

Connick Jr. joins Australian singer Urban and pop sensation Lopez. Urban has previously judged on the show, judging season twelve's competitors. Lopez has also been a judge previously. She appeared on the judging panel for season 10 and 11, leaving the season before Urban joined the show.
