As children in 1988, sisters Katie and Krista loved to play in their back garden, while their father filmed them on his video camera. They had no idea that a demon had been stalking them - and their family - since the time of their great grandmother, who supposedly made a deal with the demon in exchange for wealth, which requires the sacrifice of the first born male offspring. But since then, there has been no males born into the family.

Katie and Krista start to become increasingly scared when creepier things start to happen to them. One day, they take the video camera into their bathroom to play a popular game, 'Bloody Mary'. They turn off the lights and chant 'Bloody Mary' three times and for a few seconds, nothing happens. Then something scares the girls out of the bathroom; the light from outside the bathroom reveals the silhouette of a woman, staring into the mirror.

The first part in the Paranormal Activity franchise showed Katie and her boyfriend Micah filming the spooky goings-on in their house, culminating in Katie - possessed by the demon - throwing Micah at the camera and killing him. In the second film, it showed that before possessing Katie, the demon had possessed her younger sister Krista and attempted to take her baby son, Hunter. Krista effectively passed on the demon to her sister by burning a picture of Katie, only for the possessed Katie to kill Krista and her husband and abduct Hunter.
