Miley Cyrus Smoking On Stage Steals The MTV EMA Awards Spotlight

  • 11 November 2013

Miley Cyrus was always going to star in the Monday morning gossip headlines when she was first announced as a performer at the 2013 MTV EMAs. The question was: what will she do? Besides 'twerking' with a dwarf during the award show's opening act - which included a rendition of her hit 'We Can't Stop' - there really wasn't that much to write home about regarding her performances. It was what she did to celebrate winning the Best Video award that won her the headlines.

Each of Miley's outfits were as interesting as the one she showed up to the event in

Winning the top video gong for the controversial and much-parodied 'Wrecking Ball' video, Cyrus ascended the stairs to the stage and thanked her fans - her 'Smilers' as she calls them - for their support and director Terry Richardson for his work on the video, before taking out the pre-rolled joint from her bag. Or at least it looked like a joint. Closing her speech, the singer commented on how she couldn't find space for the award in her Chanel handbag, but did find the supposed spliff, which she lit up and smoked as she walked off the stage. A nod to the tolerant laws of the Netherlands and her own wild antics of late, the move has created a wave of controversy, making sure Miley's name stays in the gossip columns for at least another week.

Iggy Azalia reveals a bit too much

Robin Thicke couldn't even whip up controversy when he was joined on stage by Australian rapper Iggy Azalia, however Iggy did do her bit to provide some talking points for the night on the red carpet before the show. Sporting a black dress with a long slit up the side, the rapper attempted to adjust her beige thong on the red carpet whilst the paps snapped away, resulting in a few pictures making their way online that reveal her genitals in full. Someone had to wear less than Miley we suppose.

Anchorman bikes around Daft Punk

With Miley taking home most of the attention from the night, many of the other events went without too much mention, which is a little unfair given the fact that the rest of the night was actually quite entertaining. For a start, Will Ferrell's comic creation Ron Burgundy was one of the presenters for the night, and Ferrell was on top form as he channeled his inner news anchor. After riding a tandem bicycle around the streets of Amsterdam with Daft Punk, Ron was on hand to deliver the laughs once again, thanks in part to a triumphant Eminem.

Afrojack gets burned

After delivering a spellbinding performance, Em left the stage to be honored with the Global Icon award, presented to him by the San Diego-based news reporter. Holding the award aloft, the rapper told the crowd “Wow this is crazy! This is nuts. I just wanna say thanks to everybody. Thank you MTV Europe,” before channeling his inner Brick Tamland and declaring “I love award.”

When asked whether he might "love lamp" by Ron, Em once again stared blankly at the camera and said "I love math." Burgundy then tried to stir up some trouble by suggesting that one of the night's performers, Afrojack, had been "talking sh*t" about Em, prompting the rapper to reply "who?" Luckily, there was burn cream readily available for the Dutch DJ.

Kary Perry takes the big prize, Bieber stays at home

On top of his Global Icon win, Eminem also took home the award for Best Hip Hop Artist too, and he finished the night alone in the multiple award-getting game. Katy Perry and Justin Bieber managed to win in the two main categories, sweeping up in the Best Female and Best Male categories respectively, whilst Bruno Mars took home the Best Song gong for 'Locked Out of Heaven.' With Miley winning the Best Video award, the Best Newcomer award was handed to Macklemore and Ryan Lewis and the Best Live Performer award was handed to Beyonce.
