Hollywood superstar CAGE is back to his unpredictable and laconic best as Yuri Orlov, a young Ukranian immigrant who seizes his slice of the American Dream by selling an Uzi. This triggers Yuri's brilliant arms dealing career and over the next 25 years, he sells guns around the world "to every army but the Salvation Army."
Yuri's suits become as sharp as his patter when business booms in the chaotic aftermath of the Cold War. His only obstacles: his junkie brother's wavering morality (JARED LETO), the one relentless Interpol cop he cannot pay-off (ETHAN HAWKE), his trophy wife (BRIDGET MOYNAHAN), who may not turn a blind eye forever, old school rival death merchant (IAN HOLM) and a psychotic African dictator (EAMONN WALKER) whose pleasure is the business of war. But Yuri's greatest danger comes from his lifelong enemy… his conscience.
LORD OF WAR is written and directed by Andrew Niccol (The Truman Show, Gattaca, S1m0ne) and stars Academy Award-Winner NICOLAS CAGE (National Treasure, Adaptation, Leaving Las Vegas, Face Off, Con Air, The Rock) and Academy Award-Nominee ETHAN HAWKE (Taking Lives, Training Day, Gattaca, Reality Bites, Dead Poets Society). Joining them in the stellar cast are BRIDGET MOYNAHAN (I Robot, The Sum of All Fears, The Recruit, Coyote Ugly), JARED LETO (Panic Room, Fight Club, Requiem For A Dream, American Psycho) and Academy Award-Nominee IAN HOLM (The Lord of the Rings, The Aviator, The Day After Tomorrow, The Sweet Hereafter, Alien).
The film explores a little-known consequence of the end of the Cold War - the enormous quantity of arms that suddenly became available for sale by former Soviet states to developing countries (especially in Africa) and the vast sums of money made by the arms dealers who sold them.
Many believe it is the greatest heist of the 20th Century. In Ukraine alone between 1982 and 1992 over $32 billion in arms were stolen. No culprit has ever been caught or prosecuted.
Part social commentary, part black comedy, part character study, LORD OF WAR is an original and devastating action adventure.
