Worst Excuse for Family Entertainment: RV
Meanwhile, the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation, which nominates the worst films of the year the day before the movie academy nominates the best, selected Basic Instinct 2, BloodRayne, Lady in the Water, Little Man, and Wicker Man as its candidates for worst picture of the year. Tim Allen, Nicolas Cage, Larry the Cable Guy (Dan Whitney), Rob Schneider, and Marlon and Shawn Wayans were nominated for the worst actor Razzie. Hilary and Haylie Duff, Lindsay Lohan, Kristanna Loken, Jessica Simpson, and Sharon Stone had the dubious honor of being nominated in the worst actress category.
Pity the two newcomers as Pirates Of The Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest is expected to continue to seize box-office treasure over the weekend. You, Me and Dupree, starring Owen Wilson, Kate Hudson and Matt Dillon, and Little Man, starring Marlon and Shawn Wayans are each expected to earn somewhere in the neighborhood of $15 million apiece, while Pirates, according to analysts, is likely to add another $60-70 million to its booty, with many moviegoers who flocked to theaters last week to see the Johnny Depp sequel returning for a second ride. If it does, it would -- in a single ten-day period -- become the highest-grossing film of the year, exceeding the $231.7 million earned during the entire run of X-Men: The Last Stand.. The record for a second weekend was set by Shrek 2, which earned $72.2 million in 2004.
Technically speaking, "Scary Movie 2" is a real mess. The editing is pathetic, mostly because the script -- if you can call it that -- is just a series of unrelated horror movie japes put in almost random order and tied together by about two minutes of plot.
Characters disappear completely from the story without explanation and blatant continuity errors abound because some gags where left on the cutting room floor while the follow-up jokes were kept. In one scene a character is lying in a pool of blood, then a second later the blood is gone. Then it's back, then it's gone again, then it's back again. No attempt whatsoever is made to cover up this sloppy, choppy, rushed-into-production total lack of cohesion.
But comedically speaking, "Scary Movie 2" is an almost constant laugh riot of extreme gross-out humor and surprisingly limber lampoonery -- and this is coming from a guy who didn't think much of the first "Scary Movie" and was pretty irritated when the Wayans brothers (director Keenen Ivory and stars Shawn and Marlon) broke their promise not to make a sequel.
