Sir Elton John has made the unusual choice of hiring a commercials director to helm his long-awaited movie-musical biopic.
The rocker joined forces with his film producer partner David Furnish and Billy Elliot writer Lee Hall to work on Rocketman, which will tell the story of the star's life and career through his music and now officials at Rocket Pictures, Sir Elton's film production company, have announced Michael Gracey as the project's director.
Gracey is well known for his music-centric, dance-filled ads, including water brand Evian's break dancing baby commercial, but this will be his first feature film.
Gracey said, “Everyone knows and loves Elton John’s music, but the true story of his life is so incredible that it can only be described as a fantasy. His journey from impossible dreamer to stardom and uncontrollable excess is something only a musical film can capture, and I’m so excited to be the one to tell his story.”
Rocket CEO Steve Hamilton Shaw added, “Michael has an innovative, imaginative and compelling vision for the film. We want to create an experience that surprises and moves audiences and knew immediately that he was the perfect director to take them on this journey.”
