Since T.J.'s mother died in a lethal car crash he and his father, Paul, have struggled to get on with life and are forced to live with T.J's grandma. When T.J meets a long-haired rocker by the name of Hesher, at first neither person is particularly taken by the other, there's a huge age gap for one thing but after an initial bad meeting Hesher begins to take on the role of a mentor for the young boy.

Some might say a pyromaniac rocker might be a terrible influence on a young mind, but with T.J.'s dad preoccupied in his own sorrow, and he hardly notices when Hesher moves into their house uninvited. T.J. is free to do what he wishes; however when a bully starts to pick on him, Hesher is of no help but luckily for T.J a grocery clerk by the name of Nicole comes to his rescue. As T.J becomes closer to both Nicole and Hesher, the threesome form an unlikely friendship.
