It looks like ‘New Girl’ star Zooey Deschanel’s return to the big screen is really in full swing as the actress has just been added to another project, entitled The Driftless Area. Shooting is expected to begin next month on the dark comedy, which boasts an impressive cast and crew and looks like it could be the perfect vehicle to relaunch Deschanel’s film career, which seems to have taken a back seat to television lately.

Based on Tom Drury’s 2006 novel, The Dirifless Area sees Deschanel cast as an enigmatic woman, named Stella, who wins the heart of bartender Pierre, who has been forced back to his hometown after the death of his parents. When they fall in love, Pierre ends up unwittingly being pitted against a volatile criminal. Described as an atmospheric comedy, Anton Yelchin will star alongside Deschanel as the lovestruck bartender. 25 year old Yelchin was last seen alongside Tom Hiddleston and Tilda Swinton in vampire flick Only Lovers Let Alive. Prevously he’s been known for his roles in Star Trek and Fright Night. Playing Yelchin’s adversary is John Hawkes, who’s known for his work in the HBO series ‘Deadwood’. Other supporting cast members announced include seasoned character actor Ciaran Hinds and Alia Shawkat aka Maeby from ‘Arrested Development’.

Directing will be up and comer Zachary Sluser, who’s last work was the 2009 short film Path Lights. Path Light was also based on a work by Tom Drury and the pair are collaborating again for The Driftless Area script. Keith Kjarval will be producing through his Unified Pictures company and the film will be selling its international rights at Cannes next month. Kiarval has told The Wrap he is “excited about making this film as it is so darkly humorous and wrought with atmosphere and frankly, I am excited to be telling such a delicious story with some of my favourite actors."
