How 'New Girl' Became One Of The Best Shows On Television

Zooey Deschanel Max Greenfield Jake M. Johnson

New Girl has gained such an enthusiastic and loyal fan base since it began back in 2011 that it is now considered one of the best shows on television. The series, which follows the antics of wacky Jess and her three male housemates, has become popular with both men and women, replacing the FRIENDS-shaped void left in our lives when Ross, Rachel and crew left us back in 2004 (was it that long ago?!).

The show’s creator, Elizabeth Meriwether, has claimed that on any other show Jess would have been left on the sidelines of the major action, whereas in New Girl, she is the star. The show marketed Zooey’s character as “Simply Adorkable”, in comparison to her much more conventionally cool friend, model Cece.

Let's Take A Look At 'New Girl' Zooey Deschanel's Music Career

Prince Zooey Deschanel

If somebody has asked us to compile a list of artists who we thought Prince would be most likely to record a duet with, Zooey Deschanel would definitely not have made the cut.  In fact, she wouldn't even have made the pre-cut cut.

While the quirky New Girl actress does often pursue her own indie music career outside of her day job, she’s the last person we would have expected funk king Prince to bring along for his comeback ride.  Although it turns out he is a huge fan of the actress and her show, contacting Zooey by email, claiming that he only watches two things on television...New Girl and the news.

Zooey Deschanel Prince

The New Girl episode starring Prince pulled in a monumental 25.8 million viewers thanks to the Super Bowl lead in on Sunday evening. It also scored an 11.8 rating among adults 18-49, making it the highest rated scripted entertainment telecast in the adult demo on broadcast TV in three years (incidentally it was the biggest since Fox's Glee episode, after the Super Bowl).

Golden Globes Glory: Last weekend's Golden Globe awards set hearts racing ahead of March's Oscars with plenty of deserving winners next to a few jaw-dropping snubs. 12 Years A Slave predictably came out on top with the big gong but a few unpredictabilities set award odds and Oscars speculation askew. Newbie comedy Brooklyn Nine-Nine saw off rivals to claim two awards whilst Blue Jasmine's Cate Blanchett took the leading lady award alongside Dallas Buyers Club's  for the men.

Gravity's Alfonso Cuarón stole Best Director from Steve McQueen whilst Breaking Bad and Behind The Candelabra snatched the big TV awards. The surprise wins also made for some truly memorable speeches too, with Elisabeth Moss exclamation of "Oh s**t!" and Jacqueline Bisset's sweary ramble marking two particular highlights. Read about all the winners here.

Bloggers Defend Mindy Kaling, While Kaling Defends Elle Cover

Mindy Kaling Amy Poehler Zooey Deschanel Allison Williams

Bloggers and online commenters are in a bit of a twist over Mindy Kaling’s newly released Elle cover, but the star of The Mindy Project herself is staying classy about it. After the four covers of this month’s issue (featuring Kaling and fellow honorees Zooey Deschanel (New Girl), Amy Poehler (Parks and Recreation) and Allison Williams (Girls)), people were quick to point out that Kaling seemed to have drawn the short end of the stick. While the other women were pictured in color, full-body portraits, while Kaling received the black and white treatment. Her photo is also the only one cropped to focus just on her face.

Mindy Kaling, Fox Fall Party
Did Kaling's body type prevent her from getting the same treatment as her fellow actresses?

Because Kaling is the only one who counts as “curvier” by Hollywood standards (although a size 8 could hardly be called “curvy” in Regular People Land), the conclusion that Elle had cropped her due to restrictive beauty standards was obvious. The same sort of controversy happened back in 2013, when Melissa McCarthy posed for the cover, draped in a baggy coat. Back then, however, McCarthy insisted that the look had been her own choice and that was that.

Golden Globes 2014 Celebrates New Shows Over The Old As Television Nominations Are Revealed

The nominations for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards were revealed this week and although there were few surprises in the movie nominations; in the television categories however, it's time for change in the established order of critically-acclaimed TV. Former nomination regulars like Mad Men and Homefront are nowhere to be seen in the nominees lists, replaced instead by the new order of critically-acclaimed shows.

Master of Sex
Master of Sex, along with House of Cards, is now the show to beat

Master of Sex and House of Cards now look like the shows to beat, with Breaking Bad making what will be its final appearance at the Golden Globes with the series ending this year. This comes just a year after Homeland achieved the impressive feat of winning Best Drama Series, Best Male Actor and Best Female Actor all in one night, although this does mark the second year in a row that the 2007-2009 winner Mad Men has not appeared in the Best Drama category.

5 Celeb Couples We Didn't Want To See Split

Zooey Deschanel Ben Gibbard Michael Sheen Kate Beckinsale Karen Elson Jack White

A break up is rarely an easy time for a couple but ever get that feeling that some couples, i.e. NOT Rihanna and Chris Brown, were so well-matched that it was hard to imagine them not being an item? Yup, us too, so we restrained ourselves with a list of the top five celebrity couples we reckon never should have parted.

1) Zooey Deschanel & Ben Gibbard

What is love now that we are no longer in a world where the Zooey Deschanels can't make a happy marriage with the Deathcab for Cutie frontmen? Woe is us indeed. Him: the sultry, thoughtful indie singer and guitarist who is responsible for such odes to eternal love as 'I'll Follow You Into The Dark.' Her: the cute, funny and (dare we say it?) quirky actress who, with one flick of her indie girl bangs in 500 Days of Summer, launched an odyssey of shy, introverted teenage dreams against a backdrop of The Smiths songs.

Giuliana Rancic Really Does Sparkle In Her $1 Million Diamond Ring

Giuliana Depandi Zooey Deschanel

Giuliana Rancic looked damn good in her Tadashi Shoji dress at Sunday (22 Sept.) night's 65th Annual Emmy Awards, but frankly she could have worn a potato sack and still packed a glamour punch, because it wasn't her dress that people were talking about. The E! presenter looked a million dollars on the red carpet, and that might have something to do with the fact that what she was wearing was worth a million dollars, and that's just what she had on her finger!

Giuliana Rancic
Giuliana shows off her sparkler

Just to prove that she could glam it up with the best of them, Rancic wore an 18-karat, oval diamond ring made from white gold by jewellers Forevermark, which is reportedly worth - according to Today - $1,030,000. But that wasn't all the bling that the presenter had on display, as she matched up her absurdly glam finger piece with some matching earrings. The estimate price for the ear accessories hasn't been revealed, however it is assumed that, given they lacked in diamonds compared to her sparkling ring, they probably cost less than a million each.

Though Zooey Deschanel may have not won an Emmy Award this year for the hit comedy, New Girl, the actress made sure that she was the centre of attention on the red carpet style ratings. Deschanel, 33, ditched her usual knee-length skirts and ballet pumps for utterly elegant attire that was in perfect keeping with the prestigious television awards.

Dressed in a floor-length, icy blue J. Mendel gown, Deschanel put a twist on her usual heavy block fringe with some luxurious curls. The dress featured daring details - such as a side split and keyhole bodice - that were kept classy by the shining blue silk and the tumbling waist sash. She topped off her red carpet glamour with a glittering box clutch, a Chanel tourmaline cocktail ring and a pair of incredibly high white satin heels.

Dennis Farina Remembered By 'New Girl' Stars Zooey Deschanel, Jake Johnson

Dennis Farina Zooey Deschanel Jake M. Johnson Dustin Hoffman

Dennis Farina, the best-loved American actor best known as Detective Joe Fontana on Law & Order, is being remembered in the television and movie world following his death at the age of 69 this week. Farina - whose style was so inimitable that producers and directors called for 'Dennis Farina types' when casting cops and mobsters - died in Scottsdale, Arizona after suffering a blood clot in his lung.

Farina, who worked as a real life police officer before turning to television and movies, was gifted with a naturalistic acting presence that flourished in the likes of Saving Private Ryan, Snatch and on Crime Story.

One of his last television roles came on Fox's smash-hit sitcom New Girl, on which he played Jake Johnson's character's flamboyant and estranged con man father whose attempts to reconnect with his sibling turn out to be an elaborate scam.

Jared Leto Is All Dolled Up In Pink Wig And Fake Lashes

Jared Leto Katy Perry Zooey Deschanel

The latest pressing question on people’s minds – does Jared Leto resemble Katy Perry or Zooey Deschanel? Not in his natural state of course, then he mostly resembles a moodier version of Jake Gyllenhaal (by popular opinion). But put a pink wig and some cherry red lipstick on that man and you’ve got yourself a Katy Perry lookalike, apparently. You can see where we’re going with this. right? Leto donned the drag getup for the cover of Candy magazine – no special reason, presumably because he just felt like wearing a pink wig that day. According to MTV, the cover was shot by Terry Richardson, whom you may recognise from Kate Upton’s infamous Cat Daddy video, or most other things Kate Upton has done, really.

Leto ditched the black in favor of a cotton candy pink getup.

Ok, the 30 Seconds To Mars vocalist does, in fact, have a movie to promote these days. Leto tends to go for the quirkier roles out there and his part in The Dallas Buyers Club follows the same pattern. In DBC, the singer/actor plays an AIDS-afflicted transsexual. According to the Candy article, he was forced to lose 30lbs for that role.

'In A World'...Where Lake Bell Talks About Voices [Trailer]

Lake Bell Eva Longoria Fred Melamed Demetri Martin Michaela Watkins Rob Corddry Ken Marino Zooey Deschanel

Lake Bell revealed in an interview with Yahoo! Movies that she was trying to address more than an inequality in the film industry with her new movie In A World, if we subconsciously associate power and a sense of omnipotence (which is needed for narrating film trailers) with manliness, thus culturally its preferable for us to hear a man narrating. Or that "resonance" makes it "easier and more authoritative to hear".

Another reason for doing the film is Bell's own strident stance on the power of speech and intonation she uses the insipid use of "sexy baby talk" as an example emphasising the importance of using your voice as it "is such a profound tool for communication and how you are perceived".

That all sounds terribly deep and philosophical yet that's not how it comes across in the trailer with Bell showing off her vocal skills (the Russian Star Wars impression is something to look out for).

What The Hell Has Happened To M. Night Shyamalan?

M. Night Shyamalan Bruce Willis Sony Zooey Deschanel Mark Wahlberg Matt Dillon Melissa Leo Will Smith

How many chances is M. Night Shyamalan going to get to direct a big-budget movie without making it toe-curlingly horrible? The Indian-American filmmaker proved he had the talent to put together an entertaining narrative with The Sixth Sense, though audiences are still waiting for Shyamalan to recreate that magic. They have been waiting for a long time.

There were flashes of quality in his two efforts after the Bruce Willis horror-drama, Signs and Unbreakable, though both suffered from sequences that bordered on the ridiculous. The dip in form continued with The Village (2004) though reached a terrifying low with Lady in the Water (2006) - or so we thought.

The Happening, starring Zooey Deschanel and Mark Wahlberg, prompted the New Republic to assert, "[A]n astonishment, so idiotic in conception and inept in execution that, after seeing it, one almost wonders whether it was real or imagined," though Shyamalan's career eventually reached its nadir with the infamous Last Airbender (2010) about a 12-year-old boy who provides the last hope of restoring harmony to a land consumed by chaos. "$150,000,000 well wasted. The Last Airbender is an insult to those wanting sophisticated, entertaining or even competent cinema," said Michael Leader of Film4. In his scathing review, Peter Bradshaw of The Guardian said, "After the first five seconds, it seems as if you have been watching it for around two-and-a-half hours, and that this time has passed in four-and-a-half days."

Zooey Deschanel Not The Boston Bomber: Caption Company Issues Apology

Zooey Deschanel

Zooey Deschanel has received an apology after a TV gaff surrounding one of the Boston Marathon bombers saw one of the two suspects erroneously tagged as the New Girl actress.

Caption Solutions provides the closed captions for Fox network affiliate KDFW and, during coverage of the terrible incidents of last week - which saw three people die and dozens injured when two explosions went off by the Boston Marathon finishing line – they mistakenly tagged Deschanel’s name to a picture of actual bomb suspect Dzhokhar Tsarnaev. On seeing the error, which occurred during last Friday’s manhunt for the suspect (April 19, 2013), Deschanel took to Twitter and wrote “Woah! Epic closed captioning FAIL!”

Now an apology has been issued, according to the New York Daily News, who report that a statement from Lawrence, Kansas-based Caption Solutions said that it and its captioner “deeply regret” the mistake. Company president Kala J. Patterson added in a statement issued Tuesday (April 23, 2013) they “sincerely apologize for this error.” Earlier in the week, Tsarnaev was charged with using a weapon of mass destruction and, if found guilty, he could face the death penalty. The 19 year-old’s elder brother Tamerlan Tsarnaev was also a suspect though he died after a police shoot-out last week aged 26.

Captioning Service Apologizes For Naming Zooey Deschanel As Suspect In Boston Bombing

Zooey Deschanel

The closed captioning company, responsible for identifying Zooey Deschanel as a key suspect in the Boston bombing, has issued an apology. The closed captioning mishap raised mild uproar last week. It was clear that it had just been a mistake, of course, and that Deschanel wasn’t actually a suspect. The real suspect was 19-year-old college student Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, who later was arrested and hospitalized. Most people found the blunder, supposedly made by Fox 4, a Fort Worth-based affiliate of Fox News, awkward, if anything. Zooey herself just tweeted one line about the whole incident: “Whoa! Epic closed captioning FAIL!”

The network, however, was embarrassed and scrambled to find the person, or persons responsible. Turns out it was the closed captioning service. Now the company, Kansas-based Lawrence, Caption Solutions has issued an apology, saying that it and its captioner “deeply regret” the mistake. Company president Kala J. Patterson said in a statement issued Tuesday they “sincerely apologize for this error.”

Somehow, from that statement we get the feeling that the captioner in question isn’t having the best time at work right now. Miss Deschanel hasn’t issued any further comments. Bottom line: the investigation is still ongoing, but Zooey Deschanel is decidedly not a terrorist. Move along, nothing to see here.

Cats, cars and bins; that seems to be what's going down on a forthcoming episode of New Girl if the pictures we have of Zooey Deschanel and Jake Johnson filming in Los Angeles are anything to go buy. A couple of amusing shots - more of which can be seen in our full gallery - show Deschanel looking befuddled whilst standing next to a car that's got felines, standing looking befuddled next to a bin, and, well, just generally looking befuddled really.
