Meanwhile, two spirits of The Land of the Remembered named La Muerte and Xibalba look upon the scene in fascination during the Day of the Dead; a time when spirits are able to effect the the land of the living as they pass between worlds. They decide to make a bonding wager on who will win Maria's affection, with La Muerte betting on Manolo being the victor. Now it's finally been released - has Guardians of the Galaxy lived up to all the hype?
Guardians of the Galaxy was given a big platform to live up to before its official release with many calling the tenth Marvel instalment the best in the collection yet. First view critics were impressed with the look of the film and its special effects, the acting ensemble and the humour and comic play in it that is not always found in a Marvel superhero film. Even Jim Starlin, the comic book creator of villain Thanos, waded in, calling it Marvel’s best movie so far.
Guardians of the Galaxy has had a lot to live up to
But, upon release, could it really live up those lofty expectations? The answer is yes and for many reasons.

The success of Marvel's new film Guardians of the Galaxy has led to a resurgence in popularity for classic 70's rock.
Guardians of the Galaxy's quest for world domination seems to be going pretty well- the film has not only slain at the box office, it's won over the critics, and perhaps most importantly, the fans. But the film's success has also had a more musical impact: its delightfully retro soundtrack, featuring 1970's pop and rock hits, has gone straight to the top of the iTunes Charts.
Featuring songs including 10CC's 'I'm Not In Love' and The Five Stairsteps 'Ooh Child', it's an electic group of tracks brought together under the title 'Guardians of the Galaxy: Awesome Mix Vol. 1'. Audiences were given a sneak peek of things to come in the film's trailer, when Blue Swede's 'Hooked on a Feeling' made an appearence and set the tone for things to come.

The 36 year-old actress had her 'Crossroads' co-star's back when she was recently asked about Spears' 'Alien' Auto-Tune controversy.
Even though the last time they worked together was over ten years ago, Zoe Saldana proves to be very loyal person as she rushed to defend her 'Crossroads' co-star Britney Spears when asked about the singer's recent 'Alien' Auto-Tune controversy.
Saldana rushed to Spears' defense
In an appearance on Bravo TV's 'Watch What Happens Live' on Thursday (July 31st), 'The Guardians of the Galaxy' actress wasn't too pleased when a caller asked if she had heard the leaked song with auto-tune.
By refusing to follow the usual formula, filmmaker James Gunn has made Marvel's best-yet movie, a summer action-adventure that provides more cinematic fun than the rest of the year's blockbusters rolled into one. It's shamelessly entertaining, keeping the focus on sparky characters even as the action spirals into exhilarating set-pieces around them. And the best thing is that the film isn't actually about the big plot: it's about a group of people who should hate each other but instead come together as a team.
In a pre-logo sequence set in 1988 America, a young boy is kidnapped by aliens. Some 25 years later, Peter (Chris Pratt) has become an ace thief who roams the galaxy in search of cash. Curious and charming, he can get himself out of most scrapes, but when he collects a mysterious orb for a client he ends up as the target of two bounty hunters, the raccoon-like Rocket and tree-like Groot (voiced by Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel). And the villainously destructive Ronan (Lee Pace) sends his best fighter Gamora (Zoe Saldana) to get the orb for his own nefarious plan. Rounded up and thrown into prison, Peter, Gamora, Rocket and Groot stage a daring escape with the help of literal-minded muscleman Drax (Dave Bautista), then must work together to deal with this troublesome orb. So they contact Peter's mentor/nemesis Yondu (Michael Rooker) before taking on Ronan and his second-best fighter, Gamora's half-cyborg sister Nebula (Karen Gillan).
Gunn gives the film a look and tone unlike anything in the Marvel universe, with colourful ships, sassy humour and freewheeling action that propels the story and deepens the character at the same time. It also makes the most of the well-worn 1980s mixtape Peter uses as his own personal soundtrack. It's the kind of riotously thrill ride that makes us hold on for dear life, loving every twist and turn. And since it's so tightly focused on the characters, the action plot involving the orb merely adds texture around the edges. As do terrific actors like Glenn Close and John C. Reilly in small but pivotal roles.

Ahead of the Guardians of The Galaxy release, Pratt has spoken of his role as Peter Quill, Star Lord.
It’s been a well-documented rise to fame for Chris Pratt – the guy who used to carve out sections of his Reebok classics because he couldn’t afford new ones that fit. Now, he leads an all star cast in Marvel’s latest multi-movie deal, and if the reviews are anything to go by, he’s got himself a franchise to be proud of.
Chris Pratt executing part of the part-plan he has partly figured out
"What's really nice about this movie is that I believe we did something that's never been done before ... So, maybe people wouldn't have seen me in this role, but that's because they weren't able to have the vision that James [Gunn, director] had for what this could be,” explained Pratt to Collider.

London’s Leicester Square played host to the Guardian of The Galaxy premiere last night. The latest Marvel adventure has been attracting strong praise for the critics ahead of what is expected to be a big box office weekend for action-comedy.
“They're the thieves, the bounty hunters and the neglected”, explains Zoe Saldana of their characters in this featurette. “It's not a typical superhero movie.” Chris Pratt – who plays the ‘hero’ role, adds: “Peter Quill is the only human in this crazy world. He doesn't have superhuman strength or the abillity to fly but he uses his cunning and his charm to get himself out of situations.” Finally, Bradley Cooper – who plays a machine gun-wielding Racoon, Rocket - spoke highly of the melding of genres, both action and comedy. “There's a lot of humour in this one and a lot of heart. There's nothing like it, that's for sure.”
The film’s stars, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, John C. Reilly, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Benicio Del Toro, Djimon Hounsou, Michael Rooker, Dave Bautista, Laura Haddock, Glenn Close, Ophelia Lovibond, Peter Serafinowicz and Melia Kreiling – amongst others – were in attendance at the glitzy London premiere last night. The Marvel movie to top all Marvel movies? Well, at least until Avengers 2.
After intense promotion from Marvel over the past six months, Guardians of the Galaxy is out in cinemas next week, but not before the critics get their say. This time, it’s a resounding yes, as the acting, the story and most of all the visuals of Guardians get the reviewers’ approval.
Marvel made a gamble with Chris Pratt and it's paying off big time.
According to Forbes’ Scott Mendelson, “writer/director James Gunn and co-writer Nicole Perlman’s Guardians of the Galaxy is an absolutely crackling action-adventure film, a dazzling and engaging bit of optimistic sci-fi melodrama.” As for the story, which is usually a strong point of Marvel’s brand of superhero action, there is “inventive spectacle to spare, but it remains rooted in character chemistry and successful broad-strokes storytelling that makes the action beats count as more than visceral moments. ”

Is Zoe Saldana planning to be a working mother?
Zoe Saldana’s baby will probably get quite a lot of cool genes, so a pair of them would definitely be a good thing. A pair of babies, that is. Because that is what the Guardians of the Galaxy actress is expecting with husband, Italian artist Marco Perego, according to E! News.
Saldana rocking a high-waisted gown at the UK premiere of Guardians of the Galaxy.
The actress is yet to confirm the exciting news herself, and so far the reports by E! and Us Weekly are only backed up by insiders, but we’ll use this chance to say congratulations to the happy family anyway. It looks like Saldana is making great progress on that five children ambition she expressed in 2012.

We mean REALLY early reviews...

The brand new, full length international trailer has been released for the upcoming summer blockbuster.
Prepare to check out the new trailer for the upcoming summer blockbuster, Guardians of the Galaxy, which is due to open from the end of July. James Gunn's visualisation of Marvel's lesser-known comic book series recruits a stellar cast in an outer space setting with jaw-dropping special effects and rib-tickling one-liners.
Chris Pratt takes the lead alongside Zoe Saldana, Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Josh Brolin, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close Benicio Del Toro and Dave Bautista in what looks to be one of the action highlights of summer 2014.
In a nutshell, Pratt's adventurer, Peter Quill, gets stranded in space and unites a team of unlikely ex-con aliens in order to mount a defence against the cosmic threat of Ronan, a powerful villain with ambitions that threaten the entire universe.

Peter Quill runs into some trouble when he discovers an unusual looking orb that happens to be hunted by the merciless admiral Ronan and his army of miscreants. He is an Earthling; an unusual race within his neighbourhood in which he grew up after being removed for his home planet as a child. Naming himself the Star-Lord, he likes to think he's one heck of a superhero - but he's about to meet his match (or should we say 'matches'?). After being arrested by Ronan's people, he is greeted by four other alien outlaws. First there is the enormous Drax the Destroyer who is determined to use his supernatural strength to avenge his murdered family; then there's cyborg Gamora, the daughter of Thanos (an even bigger villain in this story); Rocket, a psychotic gun-toting raccoon; and half-man half-tree Groot. They may be distrustful of each other, but they've got to stick together if they want to save the universe from certain annihilation.
Since when did superhero films have to be serious? Marvel apply comedy to comics with 'Guardians Of The Galaxy', which is based on the original comics by Dan Abnett and Andy Lanning. The movie has been directed by James Gunn ('Super', 'Slither', 'PG Porn') and co-written by Nicole Perlman and is due for UK release on July 31st 2014.
Despite having been killed off in 'Avatar,' Sigourney Weaver's character will feature in the rest of the quadrilogy.
Sigourney Weaver will appear as her Avatar character Grace Augustine in each of James Cameron's three sequels, despite having been killed in the first movie. The 64 year-old film star first hinted in September 2012 that she'd be making a return to the hugely successful franchise but has now been confirmed to be starring in all of the quadrilogy.
"Jim says no one ever dies in science fiction," she told ComingSoon.net at the time. "He's told me the stories for the next two movies, and I have to say that they're absolutely wonderful and there's a real treat in store. Now we just have to make them."
"Sigourney and I have a long creative history, dating back to 1985 when we made Aliens," said the Cameron. "We're good friends who've always worked well together, so it just feels right that she's coming back for the Avatar sequels."
The Book Of Live will make you see death in a whole new light.
Death may not seem like an optimum subject for an animated feature, but in The Book of Life director Jorge Gutierrez quite literally brings the subject alive using vibrant colours and 3-D animation. Despite taking on what could be seen as a dark subject matter, Gutierrez has crafted a beautiful piece of moving art, which will surely enchant and enthral viewers. It might not hit theatres until October 17th, but we’re betting that this one could just be the next big animated feature.
Manolo is fighting for the affection of his love Maria
The Book of the Life begins with two gods betting on the outcome of a love triangle between a girl named Maria and her two suitors, the arrogant Joaquin and the much more charming Manolo. When Maria comes close to choosing Manolo, one of the gods intervenes, poisoning him to ensure Joaquin will be chosen.

In Mexico, two best friends Manolo (Diego Luna) and Joaquin (Channing Tatum) fall in love with the same girl, Maria (Zoe Saldana and so both face each other for her love. Two spirits passing through the world, La Muerte (Kate del Castillo) and Xibalba (Ron Perlman), make a bet over who will triumph out of the two. Muerte on Manolo and Xibalba on Joaquin. When the Xibalba feels the odds are against him, he brings Manolo into The Land Of The Remembered.
The Book Of Life sees Manolo setting out on an exciting, but dangerous journey across three majestic worlds where he will face his greatest challenges, in order to return to Mexico and win over Maria once and for all.
From producer Guillermo Del Toro, The Book Of Life is an animated comedy film directed by Jorge Gutierrez and written by Gutierrez and Doug Langdale (Aladdin: The Return of Jafar). The Book Of Life sees Gutierrez attempt a Nightmare Before Christmas esque Tim Burton style, with jovially dark animation. With exceptional visuals and a story of fortitude, The Book Of Life should be a loveable film for all.
Peter Quill is a fearless Earthling pilot who rather proudly proclaims himself to be an outlaw, going by the nickname Star-Lord. As a child, he was taken from his home planet and forced to live around various alien races, but even he is in for a surprise when he is captured by merciless hunters led by the evil admiral Ronan after he tries to make off with an extraordinary orb. It is during his imprisonment that he meets four other intrepid outlaws. There’s Drax the Destroyer, a man of muscle hellbent on avenging the tragic murders of his family; Gamora, a green-skinned cyborg who is the rebellious daughter of Ronan’s boss Thanos; Rocket, a genetically modified raccoon with incredible firearm dexterity; and Groot, a half-man half-tree creature who knows little about the technological world. Despite their reluctance, the five must join together to save the universe from Thanos’ dastardly plans.

Groot, the tree-like creature, Vin Diesel voices in the upcoming ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ appears to have won over the cast of the film. In a special Q&A session on Monday (19th May), Diesel and director James Gunn spoke affectionately about Groot with Diesel claiming the role helped him overcome the death of Paul Walker.
Guardians of the Galaxy, the latest film based on Marvel’s comic books, is due to be released in July. With fans already speculating about the film’s plotline and special effects, the cast and crew were happy to chime in with a special Q&A session on Facebook on Monday (19th May). Looking for news about the eagerly awaited 'Avatar' sequels? We've gathered it all together to get a better idea of what to expect.
All has been fairly quiet on the Avatar sequels front lately, so we thought we’d do a bit of investigating to unearth what information is available to us. We're nosy like that.
Director James Cameron has admitted they are still in the early stages of production, “Right now we’re developing the software. I’m writing the scripts. We’re designing all the creatures and characters and the settings, an so on.” While he didn’t exactly blow us away with a ton of new details, he did give a little away about what we can expect from the coming movies, “I think it’s going to be spectacular. You’ll see new worlds, new habitats, new cultures.” Hopefully that means that we’ll get to travel a little more around Pandora, and see what else the world has to offer.

If the trailer for Guardians made no sense, here's the brief on the team.
By now nobody is questioning Disney and Marvel’s decision to invest in the Avengers franchise. It started out a bit rough - 2008’s The Incredible Hulk is still a mostly ignored part of the cinematic universe – but by Iron Man 3, the series was grossing billions. Now that Marvel is on sure footing and the cinematic universe has an established fanbase, the studio is making the next move with Guardians of the Galaxy.
Guardians of the Galaxy is one of the most aniticpated movies of the year
On Tuesday the studio released a trailer and it looked like a hot mess. Granted, a hot mess featuring Chris Pratt, but there was also a talking raccoon. It had the unmistakable feel of an 80s sci-fi flick. On that note, here’s what you need to know about GotG’s bunch of A-holes for this movie to make any sense.

Peter Quill is a tenacious pilot who was taken away from his home planet Earth as a child to grow up around alien races. Arrogantly nicknaming himself Star-Lord, he finds himself captured by the evil admiral Ronan's ruthless hunters during the attempted theft of a powerful orb. On his arrest, he meets four other criminal eccentrics: muscle man Drax the Destroyer, who is searching for vengeance after the brutal death of his family; the rebellious cyborg Gamora, whose father is Ronan's boss Thanos; a weapon toting, genetically modified racoon named Rocket with better gun skills than most humans; and, the latter's accomplice, tree man Groot. Soon, the group decide to band together in order to protect their galaxy after discovering what the orb is really about to be used for.

Coarse and not exactly subtle, this dark drama might disappoint viewers expecting a more traditional revenge thriller, but there's something more interesting going on here. And even though it starts at full volume and only gets more intense, the film is actually remarkably thoughtful and measured in its approach.
It's set in the Rust Belt, industrial Pennsylvania, where Russell (Bale) works in a steel mill and worries about his little brother Rodney (Affleck), who's deep in debt to a local bookie (Dafoe). Then a late-night car crash lands Russell in prison, and when he's released everything has changed. He has no job, his girlfriend (Saldana) is now dating the local sheriff (Whitaker), and Rodney is paying off his debts by fighting in bare-knuckle boxing matches. Even more perilous is the fact that all of this puts the brothers on a collision course with vicious local redneck Harlan (Harrelson), who has no intention of making their lives easier.
The film opens with a particularly brutal display of Harlan's menace, so we know what's coming. And as everything goes from bad to worse for our two heroes, the film feels almost aggressively harsh. Of course, Bale and Affleck are terrific as these damaged men whose fierce bond both helps and puts them into danger. And both actors let us see beneath the surface as their lives fall apart. In what could be the thankless ex-girlfriend role, Saldana has some surprisingly powerful moments. And Harrelson is a deeply terrifying force to reckon with.

Frank is a remarkable cop with a lot to look forward to in his life, but as happy as he is, he still has major worries for the people around him. His brother Chris has just been released from prison after a gang-related murder several years ago. Frank wants to make sure Chris stays on the straight and narrow as he rebuilds his shattered life, and offers him shelter, a job and an opportunity to restore his relationships with his former wife Monica and his children. However, Chris also finds himself reconnecting with some old 'friends' and it soon becomes clear that he has no intention of living straight. All Frank wants is a happy and secure family, but if he keeps trying to save his wayward brother's back from the law, he could find himself facing an uncertain future in the force.
'Blood Ties' is the Hollywood re-make of Jacques Maillot's 2008 French film 'Les liens du sang' which is also adapted from the novel by Bruno and Michel Papet. It has been directed by Guillaume Canet ('Little White Lies', 'Tell No One', 'Whatever You Say') and co-written by James Gray ('Two Lovers', 'We Own the Night', 'The Yards') and is due to appear in theatres on March 21st 2014.
The 'Avengers' actor's new movie charms critics at the festival.
Infinitely Polar Bear has made its debut at this year's Sundance Film Festival and seems to have emerged as one of the most prominent movies, despite some unsure reviews. In the film Mark Ruffalo ('The Avengers') plays Cameron, a dysfunctional father grappling with bipolar disorder who tries to win back his wife Maggie (Zoe Saldana) by attempting to take responsibility over their two daughters. The film is loosely based on the childhood experiences of writer and director Maya Forbes, whose father called his condition Infinitely Polar Bear.
Mark Ruffalo Searches For The Humour In Bipolar Disorder In 'Infinitely Polar Bear.'
Despite the fairly serious subject of mental health, the dramedy manages to inject some humour into the family's trying situation. Premiering at Sundance, the movie received a standing ovation at the weekend and everyone seems to be talking about the wider release of the sweet and poignant film. Both lead actors may be known for playing superheroes in action movies but Saldana has said that she enjoyed playing a parent with Ruffalo because "those are the real avengers, the real guardians of the galaxy!" via NY Daily News.
The script is ready, the primary cast is secured - buckle up for three more trips to Pandora.
“If something kind of works, they’ll just keep doing it until everybody hates it,” said Tina Fey at the Golden Globes this Sunday. Case in point: casting has begun for a second, third and fourth Avatar film.
Cameron is excited to work with the original cast again.
Last summer James Cameron enlisted the help of Josh Friedman, duo Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver, and Shane Salerno to create the screenplays. Then Stephen Lang, who played Marine Colonel Quaritch in the 2009 film, became the first actor to sign on for the sequels. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Zoe Saldana and Sam Worthington, who played Neytiri and Jake Sully, respectively, have now also been officially announced to reprise their roles in all three sequels.
What's all this 'Guardians of the Galaxy' talk about then? We cut through the internet's excited babble.
Marvel fans: prepare to get very excited. Those who have no idea what Guardians of the Galaxy is and why they should be very excited: listen up. The jazz biopic will also be Miles' directorial debut.
Don Cheadle is set to play jazz legend Miles Davis in an upcoming film focussing on the trumpeter's "silent period" alongside Ewan McGregor and Zoe Saldana. Though Cheadle has stressed that the movie will not be a biopic in the strictest biographical sense, Kill the Trumpet Player will focus on "a few dangerous days in the life of Miles Davis, as he bursts out of his silent period and conspires with a Rolling Stone writer (McGregor) to steal back his music," according to The Hollywood Reporter.
Don Cheadle Will Act And Direct In An Upcoming Miles Davis Movie.
As well as taking on the complex lead role, Cheadle will also direct the piece and has been planning the film for several years. "It's not a biopic, per se. It's a gangster pic. It's a movie Miles Davis would have wanted to star in," he told the Wall Street Journal, adding "Without throwing history away, we're trying to shuffle it and make it more cubist."
How on earth has the young actress earned such a risky accolade?
Lily Collins has been names the "most dangerous celebrity" of the year by security company McAfee after it was discovered that typing in the 24 year-old Mortal Instruments actress' name yielded more "risky" results, i.e. malicious websites, than any other.
She May Look Harmless But...
Though it may not be an accolade to be proud of, Lily being identified as the most virus-laden online name of the year serves as a warning for those who seek information on their favorite stars, films, or TV shows: cybercriminals are adept at taking advantage of the latest cultural trends to net unsuspecting web surfers.

A newly bald Karen Gillan - who shaved her head for the film - discussed getting in shape for the high-octane movie, telling us on the red-carpet, "I feel like I'm in an action movie bootcamp right now where I am on set everyday learning how to fight and I'm training like crazy and it's a really cool way to get into the character I think."
Her co-star Lee Pace praised the movie's director, saying: "James Gunn has got a great vision for the movie. He just showed us a little clip of what he's been working on for the past 10 days and it's excellent."
