Opening up about lingering pain over her famous parents’ split, Zoë Kravitz has admitted it was “very hurtful” moving away from her mother to be with her father in the wake of their break-up.
Zoë Kravitz has admitted it was “very hurtful” moving away from her mother to be with her father when the famous couple split.
‘The Batman’ actress, 35, made the confession in an interview in which she opened up about her decision to live with her rocker dad Lenny Kravitz, 60, after he broke up with her 56-year-old actress mother Lisa Bonet.
She told Esquire: “I think it was very hurtful that I moved away from her to be with my dad and my dad wasn’t even there.”
Zoë left her family home in Miami to relocate to New York City with Lenny, but he left soon after tour.
The actress added about her mum: “I just wish I had been able to appreciate what she was doing for me (at the time.)
“She was so focused on preserving my innocence. My creativity. Because she knew what the world is – that you don’t get that back.”
Lenny and Lisa first met backstage at a New Edition concert in Los Angeles in 1985 and they eloped in Las Vegas on 16 November 1987 – the ‘Angel Heart’ actress’ 20th birthday, before they had Zoë on 1 December 1988.
Zoë – who is the former couple’s only child – was aged two when her parents split in 1991, and they divorced in 1993.
The exes have stayed close, and Lenny told People in 2020 he feels their connection is “essential”.
He added: “(We) love each other just as much as before – it’s just a different situation.”
Zoë also told Esquire she felt as if her dad was getting taken advantage of at times when she was younger due to his friendly and tolerant nature.
She added: “I can smell (people’s suspicious motives) out pretty quickly. I had to when I was a kid because he didn’t.
“He’s really trusting, and it’s sweet, but I can tell exactly what someone wants.”
