More: Yaya DaCosta To Play Whitney Houston In Lifetime Biopic
The Plot
The movie will mostly focus on Whitney’s relationship with former New Edition member Bobby Brown, however it will also touch on the singer’s substance abuse issues. Speaking to CNN, Angela Bassett said, “I really just want to tell a story about a boy and a girl who fell in love. And these are the words and this is the place, and these are the people on the outside, you know? And I want to be as honest as I can about doing that.” Adding, “Well, we know that drugs were a part of their story and that's certainly an element of their story. We can't tell their story without that. It's involved, and I hope we can unpack it gently."
Why Is It Controversial?
Houston’s family have not been supportive of the film and have previously voiced their objections. TMZ reports that Houston’s sister in law Pat as saying, “Whitney is certainly worthy of more than a television movie. If Whitney were here today, this would not be happening.” Whitney’s ex husband Bobby Brown as also had no involvement in the TV movie.
When Can We Expect It?
Filming has just begun in Los Angeles, with the movie set to air on Lifetime next year.
