Son of Saul has been named as a masterpiece of world cinema where the appalling events of the Holocaust have been reimagined by Hungarian director László Nemes. In this powerful narrative the protagonist Saul Ausländer is a Jewish prisoner who has been forced to assist in the machinery of the Nazi led concentration camp in which one day he spots a dead boy who he recognises to be his son. On finding his dead son he embarks on the task of saving him from the flames and goes on a quest to find a rabbi to recite the mourner's Kaddish so that his son can be offered a proper burial.
This task is only possible due to their being a planned rebellion from the Sonderkommando in the camp giving the leaders a distraction meaning Ausländer can make the end of his son's life more bearable in these un- humane conditions. This film is a thought provoking tale that stimulates emotion about a historical event that remains one of humanity's darkest moments.
