Berlin 1945 post World War II is the setting for this complex narrative that deals with the turmoil that Germany was left in after the war dealing with questions of identity and deception. Nelly the main protagonist (Nina Hoss) a German - Jewish woman has survived the oppression that she faced whilst being in a concentration camp under German rule but has been left with a facial disfigurement as a result of a bullet. On receiving surgery for this wound she faces the test of re - building her life with a new identity as she is now unrecognisable.
Nelly enters a dangerous game in which she searches for her husband who believes she is dead and wants to know answers as to why she has been mistreated. This exciting plot directed by Christian Petzold leaves Nelly entangled in a complex web of lies questioning the love that she and her husband had as he could have been the one to expose her to the Nazis.
