To coincide with his 27th birthday, and the somewhat surprise release of his seven track EP '#7DJ(& Dias En Jamaica)', Maluma also dropped seven consecutive videos to accompany each track including this one, 'Tonika'. Maluma, the super-star Columbian singer-songwriter and actor has turned his musical pilgrimage to Jamaica into an inspired mix of Reggae infused Latin.
The summer scented songs have a spirited carnival vibe that goes back to Reggaetón’s roots with Maluma incorporating Jamaican influences and using local musicians to make a more authentic sound.
'Tonika', the lead track of the seven on the EP, features Ziggy Marley to create a smooth fusion of styles that gives rise to a well balanced track, managing to match the contrasting vocal styles with ease. The infectious beat, horns and rock steady percussion work together in harmony. When the break down comes towards the end of the song it's almost a surprise, but one that brings a smile to your face as it gives an extra element of happiness and joy.
Each of the seven videos, when watched in order, make a short movie and to wrap the whole project up with a neat bow there was even a exhibition put on in Miami by artist Federico Uribe. Maluma explained, "We turned a warehouse into the ocean, forest, jungle and much more with common trash materials. My friend Federico Uribe made all of these worlds out of recycled trash and you can listen to my new album at the exhibition as it's connected to some of the artwork." All in all, not a bad way to mark your 27th birthday!
