Julia Jacklin, purveyor of some very individual Indie Folk over the last few years, releases one of the more unexpected and unlikely seasonal songs this year with 'Baby Jesus Is Nobody's Baby Now'. With more than just a nod to fellow Aussie Nick Cave and his 1994 fan favourite song, 'Nobody's Baby Now', Jacklin has given us an alternative take on the Christmas song.
'Baby Jesus Is Nobody's Baby Now' is not so much a celebration of Christmas as a massive reality check. Jacklin tackles family feuds, annoying uncles, seasonal traditions and ultimately despair and longing. "It's good to go to bed sometimes and play holding yourself" is a fact of life for many at Christmas but when it's sung with such sadness it carries an extra resonance.
Julia Jacklin sings of arson and losing babies in the same breathe but still carries hope for the future singing that next year will be much easier for you. It's a song filled with tragedy that touches on themes of loneliness and loss, not your average seasonally focused throw away song.
The song and the video to accompany it are similarly sparse although if you just made an assumption as to the character of the song from a video still you'd be very much wide of the mark. In video Jacklin is seen dressed in Santa attire with a fur lined red glittery poncho tied at the top, a flowing long red dress and red gloves with a large white hand muff to keep her warmer still. She looks Christmas through and through as she sings but it's a mixed message and it's delivered to devastating effect with her understated vocal and minimal score.
