Grace VanderWaal continues her re-invention with gusto on her latest release and new video for 'Repeat'. The former Disney star has started to shed her butter wouldn't melt, cute and adorable, girl-next-door image and is embracing her more adventurous inner teen spirit. Her first single of the year, 'Don't Assume What You Don't Know', was a great introduction to the new, empowered and energised VanderWaal and her follow-up, 'Repeat', is no less arresting.
The transformation Grace has undergone in barely a year is quite incredible; she's no longer playing on a twee, saccharine sweet, childlike fantasy but rather developing her individuality. Grace is putting her stamp and her character into the music she is releasing in 2021. It's quite a distinct and radical change, and one that VanderWaal herself has had fleeting doubts about, but on the evidence of her first two new singles she should have no doubts whatsoever.
Grace VanderWaal is not ditching her Disney+ duties however, she's merely making a mark for herself with her latest sound. VanderWaal is committed to the 'Stargirl' sequel she is acting in with co-star Uma Thurman and will no doubt delight her fans with both sides of her personality.
On the morning that the single was released VanderWaal tweeted, "I just want to thank you all for always loving me for me in all my many shapes and forms of my art. I love you guys so much and I hope you love this song as much as I do!!!!! Love you guys GO LISTEN AND WATCH REPEAT!!"
The new track is a succinct slice of pumped up pop that perfectly showcases Grace VanderWaal's enthusiasm and energy, there's not a ukulele to be heard as the bass line, revolving riffs and frantic beat drive the track along. (It is about time you took the stabilisers off of the bike though Grace!)
