Twenty year old New Zealand Pop sensation BENEE continues on her stellar rise to the top with the release of her latest single, 'Happen To Me'. The multi award winning Stella (no pun intended) Rose Bennett looks set to bolster her fan base and further increase her already very impressive streaming figures.
To coincide with the release of her fifth single this year BENEE has also published a new lyric video. The monochrome line drawing that delivers up some dark and provoking images sits at odds somewhat with BENEE's young, relatively innocent vocal. When you listen more closely to the lyrics however the images become ever more suited.
"Hope I Don't Die Inside A Plane, I'd like to die a better way" and "What if my room burns down in flames and I die in my sleep and never wake?" BENEE sings. The revolving guitar riff and tight but effective drum beats back the soft smoky vocal as Bennett explains that her "mind likes to wind itself up". When set together with the images from the video the whole experience comes across as an exploration of mental well being.
BENEE is ploughing her own furrow and is young enough, and clearly talented enough, to take it in any direction she chooses but there are comparisons to be drawn, certainly here, to Phoebe Bridgers. 'Happen To Me' is definitely a shift in tack from her previous single, released less than two weeks before this one, 'Plain'. That song featured Lily Allen and Flo Milli in a far more commercial offering. On 'Happen To Me' BENEE takes elements heard on her breakthrough tracks 'Glitter' and 'Soaked' but exhibits a darker, more reflective and unsettled side to herself.
Miley Cyrus and Benee add to this wonderfully eclectic array.
