Nearly 30 years after we were first introduced to Iceman and Maverick, it seems a sequel to Top Gun could finally be on its way, according to star Val Kilmer. In a Facebook status shared late on Monday night, the actor seemed to confirm not only his involvement in the sequel, but also that of Tom Cruise and director Francis Ford Coppola.

Val KilmerVal Kilmer seems to be onboard for Top Gun 2.

“I just got offered Top Gun 2 - not often you get to say "yes" without reading the script... "It's starring Gene Hackman…" "Yes" "The director is Francis Coppola..." “Yes!”,” the actor wrote.

Jerry Bruckheimer and Tom Cruise!!! "Yes." We will all miss Tony Scott one of the kindest gentlemen I've ever met in the film biz, but let's fire up some fighter jets again!!!” The status was subsequently shared over 1,000 times within an hour and has now reached nearly 30,000 likes.

Kilmer and Cruise co-starred in the original 1986 film, as aviators LT Tom ‘Iceman’ Kazanski and LT Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell. It was directed by Tony Scott, who passed away in 2012.

As for Gene Hackman, the actor’s involvement in the project is the most interesting as he hasn't appeared on the big screen since 2004’s Welcome to Moosport. In 2008 Hackman confirmed that he had officially retired from acting.

Back in July Tom Cruise spoke about the prospect of revisiting Top Gun, saying “It would be fun. I would like to get back into those jets.” However the actor did lay down one very important condition for his involvement.

“I’m saying right now, no CGI on the jets.,” Cruise said. “If we can figure all that out, and the Department of Defense will allow us to do it, that would be fun.” So far Kilmer’s comments have not yet been confirmed, but last year Jerry Bruckheimer did reveal that the film’s planned plot would see Cruise’s character face off with drones.
