Only Lovers Left Alive is released in cinemas today, bringing Jim Jarmusch's supernatural romance to theatres. The movie's main draw is of course its two British leads: Tilda Swinton and Thor's Tom HIddlestone play the alluring onscreen vampire couple Adam and Eve, who are trying to find their way in the modern world.

Described as a "crypto-vampire love story" by the director, Only Lovers Left Alive brings to life a fantastical yet gritty imagining of a modern day vampire tale. You'd have thought that by now, our desire for vampire romance movies would be well and truly sated, particularly after the five Twilight movies.

However Twilight is importantly what Only Lovers is not: described as Jarmusch's best - or at least most fluent - by The Guardian, the film has a darker, more compelling plot tone, a more adult theme, better lead actors and a more realistic (if you can call it that) portrayal of what vampires living in a 21st century would probably be doing.

Jarmusch's new flick was also nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2013 Cannes Film Festival. Only Lovers stands apart from other movies of the same genre because its writer and director places an emphasis on the drama and romance and (ironically) the humanity instead of focussing on his characters' vampiristic traits and their ability for destruction.

Watch The 'Only Lovers Left Alive' Trailer:

After being around for centuries, Adam, a rock star with a penchant for vintage guitars, is finding it difficult to get his head around the modern world with all of its technology and intrusiveness. His need for privacy is threatened by the people drawn to his air of mystery and the music he makes. However, music isn't Adam's only passion: his wife Eve arrives from Tangier and the pair reignite a passionate relationship. The immortal couple eat blood popsicles, play chess, dance to the music at home, and drive around the city at night.

Their idyll is ruined when Eve's wild younger sister Ava (Mia Wasikowska) arrives, creating mayhem and testing Eve and Adam's relationship to the limits. In need of blood, the couple are forced to consider how they can continue to survive as their lifestyle and world decays around them.

Only Lovers Left Alive is released today in the UK. American fans will have to wait until the 11th April.
