The Stone Roses are to release their first new music in over two decades tonight, as the group announced that a new single would be available from 8pm on Thursday evening (May 12th).

The new track, the title of which was not revealed in the group’s Twitter announcement this morning, will be the first release from a much-anticipated third album, their first since 1994’s ill-fated Second Coming that disappointed fans so much after their legendary self-titled debut in 1989.

It will also be the first new music from the band since March 1995, when B-sides to their single ‘Ten Storey Love Song’ were revealed, called ‘Ride On’ and ‘Moses’ which did not appear on the aforementioned second album.

The announcement followed the re-appearance of a number of ‘lemon’ posters around Manchester on Tuesday, the same ones that had preceded the announcement earlier this year that the Roses would be playing four massive gigs at the city’s Etihad stadium and the T In The Park festival in Scotland.

Lead singer Ian Brown confirmed to the NME two months ago that the legendary band was at work on a new album, having announced their reformation in 2011 and toured the world with a series of triumphant shows in 2012.

Speaking outside Paul Epworth’s The Church studio in North London just before Easter, Brown said that the new material was sounding “glorious” and that the resultant album would be coming out “soon”. Fans will be hoping that it arrives to coincide with this summer’s gigs.
