Album Of The Day: The Stone Roses By The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses

The Stone Roses have just released their first single in more than 20 years, 'All For One', and it has sent some serious nostalgia through their oldest fans. We've been waiting for some new stuff ever since they reformed in 2011, but now that we have some, we can't help comparing it to their landmark debut.

The Stone RosesThe Stone Roses are back with a new single

The artist... The Stone Roses are Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni; four musicians that grew up in Manchester listening to the likes of The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Byrds, Johnny Marr, Sex Pistols and The Clash to name but a few of their early influences. Their self-titled debut album was followed by a less critically acclaimed second album called 'Second Coming' in 1994, two years after which they disbanded. They famously set-up a concert at Spike Island in 1990 which gathered 27,000 people.

The Stone Roses To Release Brand New Single Tonight

The Stone Roses Ian Brown John Squire

The Stone Roses are to release their first new music in over two decades tonight, as the group announced that a new single would be available from 8pm on Thursday evening (May 12th).

The new track, the title of which was not revealed in the group’s Twitter announcement this morning, will be the first release from a much-anticipated third album, their first since 1994’s ill-fated Second Coming that disappointed fans so much after their legendary self-titled debut in 1989.

It will also be the first new music from the band since March 1995, when B-sides to their single ‘Ten Storey Love Song’ were revealed, called ‘Ride On’ and ‘Moses’ which did not appear on the aforementioned second album.

Glastonbury 2016 - Plausible And Implausible Rumours

Glastonbury Festival Radiohead The Stone Roses Guns N Roses Ed Sheeran Fleetwood Mac

It’s that time of year again: the annual rumour mill of who is going to be making appearances at Glastonbury, plausible or otherwise. Although the three Pyramid Stage headliners have been revealed – Muse on Friday, Adele on Saturday, and Coldplay rounding things off on Sunday – there are literally several hundred other slots to be filled on the numerous other stages.

The Sunday afternoon ‘legends slot’ has also already been confirmed, with ELO set to entertain the crowds. However, there are always rumours flying around during the festival itself as to who’s going to be making low-key, surprise appearances. The reformed Libertines did so last year, appearing at the Pyramid Stage. So, are there any major names that might do this in 2016?

Blur, Pulp And Muse Dominate The Q Awards

Blur Pulp The Stone Roses Damon Albarn Bobby Womack

Britpoppers Blur fought off competition from The Stone Roses to be named best live act, but lost out to Muse for the mantle of best act in the world, Sky News Reports.

Muse have had a huge 2012 , including a headline slot at the London Olympics concert on August 12, and the release of a new album, The 2nd Law. Q magazine's editor Andrew Harrison said: "It's been the most incredible year for British music. Our bands and our anthems transformed the Olympics. A string of great albums announced fantastic new talent on the scene. And amazing comeback shows from Blur and the Stone Roses showed the enduring appeal of our best-loved musicians." Another British export to win big were Pulp, who nabbed the Q inspiration award. Emeli Sande, who also starred in the London 2012 closing gig, was named best solo artist, while Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr and Killers' frontman Brandon Flowers were named Q heroes.

The evening also took an emotional turn, as Bobby Womack beat cancer and pneumonia to win album of the year, according to The Independent. "During the time I was ill in hospital, the thing that kept me alive was Damon," Womack said. "He was really interested in me. That's what brought me back to life." Accepting his award, Womack appeared momentarily confused, thanking his collaborator "Damon Osborne".
